CLINICAL LEADER
–INPATIENT UNIT
Scope of Position :
Accountable to Rural Health Facilities Manager and the Unit Manager for the provision of clinical and professional nursing leadership.
The Clinical Leader participates in planning care at the unit, facility, and community level. The Clinical Leader acts as a patient advocate and facilitates quality improvement initiatives as appropriate. They will demonstrate and foster positive working relationships with co-workers and other members of the healthcare team /depts.
They will carry-out effective communication with all members of the health care team, the public and external community partners. The Clinical Leader is also responsible for coordination of the Restorative Care beds.
They are involved in the planning, coordination and evaluation of patient care and in the assignment of the
care of patients on the unit. He or she will coordinate and maintain patient flow on the unit and is a resource
to all team members.
The Clinical Leader must possess demonstrated clinical knowledge and skills, critical thinking skills, and effective communication and interpersonal skills. The Clinical Leader promotes the professional practice of nursing through education, mentorship and demonstrated clinical expertise. In collaboration with the nurse manager, the Clinical Leader is accountable for the prudent utilization of human, fiscal and other organizational resources to meet demands for services. The Clinical Leader competencies include: expert coaching and guidance, research, ethical decision-making, collaboration, consultation, clinical expertise and leadership.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Promotes clinical decision making with individual staff members and team members
2. Coordinates care and delegates appropriately to ensure patient care standards are achieved.
3. Manages effective coordination of services by:
Participating on interdisciplinary teams
Building and maintaining collaborative relationships among the care team
Assisting with the development of discharge plans for patients
4. Coordinates continuous quality improvement initiatives as related to patient care and staff development
5. Acts as a patient advocate, ensuring that the patient/family participate in decisions that affect his/her care.
6. Coordinates and assists with orientation of new staff
7. Collaborates with nurse manager in completion of probationary and regular performance appraisals
8. In combination with staff, assists with mentoring and support for students
9. Ensures the appropriate and effective allocation of nursing staff, including replacement and reassignment to meet operational requirements.
10. Promotes good public relations with patients, their families, staff, physicians and external agencies.
11. Promotes and maintains good working relationships within the facility, utilizing effective communication and conflict resolution skills.
12. Communicates relevant information regarding patients, family, staff, and/or community to nurse manager or facility manager as required.
13. Identifies and reports significant facility risk management issues to appropriate management.
14. Reviews the appropriate utilization of inpatient beds and discusses issues/cases with physician(s), Nurse Manager, or Facility Manager.
15. Coordinates infection control program within the Hospital and with the District
Infection Control Coordinator
16. Performs any other related tasks that may be required in order to maintain efficient work flow.
Professional Development and Continuing Education
1. Participates in continuing education programs in keeping with required competencies and skills
2. Is accountable for own professional practice through compliance with the CNA
Code of Ethics and the CRNNS Standards for Nursing Practice
3. Participates in nursing staff education programs including the development of program planning and staff education
4. Keeps current in trends and changes within the profession and within the provision of health care services
5. Identifies areas for clinical nursing research and participates in approved research projects.

Qualifications :
# Registered Nurse, currently registered with the College of Registered
#

Nurses of Nova Scotia
BScN preferred
A minimum of 5 years experience in a continuous quality improvement environment
Certification in ACLS and CPI or be willing to obtain
Strong clinical decision-making and organizational skills required
Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal and communication skills required
Demonstrated leadership in team building and problem solving required
Demonstrated personal and professional leadership abilities required
Commitment to the philosophy of family-centered care
Ability to adapt to new and varied work situations including innovative initiatives
