Latest Oxford Mindfulness Centre Research finds almost half of recurrent depression starts in
adolescence.
In an article published this week in the Journal of Affective Disorders, the Oxford team, working with
colleagues in Bangor, have shown that 48 per cent of adults suffering from recurrent depression
experienced their first serious episode of depression before the age of 18 years, and that the most
common age of this first episode was 13-15 years. The article can be downloaded from the
SCIENCE/publications page of the Oxford Mindfulness Centre web-site:

OTHER NEWS
Fundraising
We launched our campaign for research posts with a benefit with Ruby Wax of her hit show, Losing it,
in Richmond in November. This event sets in motion the fundraising network of supporters in London.
Vanda Scott CBE has joined us to lead our fundraising activities in the UK and internationally. We're
all very excited about the prospects, even in these times of economic austerity. We have a very
exciting appeal and the University Development Office has now made our appeal a priority for their
"Oxford Thinking" Campaign. For more info about the Development Campaign go to

There has been a great response to the mindfulness courses for students at Oxford University. Last
term's course went very well, and over 80 students have applied to do courses in the next two terms.
These courses, which are based on the book, Mindfulness: a Practical Guide to finding Peace in a
Frantic World, will be held at Lady Margaret Hall and will be taught in the coming term by Chris
Cullen. There’s also an article in the Oxford Student magazine about these courses featured on 6th
Feb 2012. You can find the article online here: http://oxfordstudent.com/?s=mindfulness&x=19&y=12
We've also had a number of requests for mindfulness in the workplace training. This training is also
using Mindfulness: a Practical Guide to finding Peace in a Frantic World, as a course book. For
inquires about mindfulness in the workplace training please email: omcadmin@psych.ox.ac.uk
