LEARNING GOALS
 BIG IDEAS: Evaluate the effectiveness of technological devices and procedures designed to make use
of light, and assess their social benefits;
SPECIFIC GOALS
 Analyze a technological device that uses the properties of light, and explain how it has enhanced
society.
PART 1: SELECT TOPIC & RESEARCH
 INDIVIDUALLY select a technological device that uses the properties of light to research.
 Note: due to class size, each device may only be investigated by 3 students. Selection of the
device will be on a first-come first-select basis. Don’t wait until the last minute!
 There is a list of possible devices to choose from below. However, if you are not interested in
any on the suggested list, you may choose your own. Please check with your teacher first.

information in. It is up to you to choose how you would like to display the information for your
final product. You may wish to choose to present the information in a way that you know you
will be successful. Note: you will not be orally presenting your final product.

YOUR PROJECT MUST COMMUNICATE
1. Name of technological device.
2. Historical facts about technological device must be provided. For example: when was it
invented? By whom? And why?
3. Analyze the selected technological device. For example: how does it work?
4. Provide a ray diagram illustrating how this device works, and identify any of the following that
are applicable: type of mirror, rays, angles, focus, focal length, light source, etc.
5. Explain how this device has enhanced or benefited society, for example in the area of culture,
education, health, security, entertainment, communication, or the environment.
6. Bibliography. You must include a list of internet sites / web addresses OR appropriate
bibliographic information.
Be creative. Your audience to target the information is your fellow classmates. They require information
that is engaging and easy to understand.
