Course Number: Credit: 1.0
Course Description:
The purpose of this course is to provide grade 10 students, using texts of high complexity, integrated language arts
study in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language for college and career preparation and readiness.
The content should include, but not be limited to, the following:
 active reading of varied texts for what they say explicitly, as well as the logical inferences that can be
drawn
 analysis of literature and informational texts from varied literary periods to examine:
o text craft and structure
o elements of literature
o arguments and claims supported by textual evidence
o power and impact of language
o influence of history, culture, and setting on language
o personal critical and aesthetic response
 writing for varied purposes
o developing and supporting argumentative claims
o crafting coherent, supported informative/expository texts
o responding to literature for personal and analytical purposes
o writing narratives to develop real or imagined events
o writing to sources using text- based evidence and reasoning
o writing to sources using text- based evidence and reasoning
 effective listening, speaking, and viewing strategies with emphasis on the use of evidence to support or
refute a claim in multimedia presentations, class discussions, and extended text discussions
 collaboration amongst peers

 Three Ring Binder (1.5 or 2 inch)
 College Ruled Notebook Paper

 5 Notebook Dividers labeled: Grammar, Vocabulary, Writing, Literature, Miscellaneous
 Pens (Blue or Black Ink)
 Pencil (#2)
 Highlighter (s)
 Three Hole Punch
**Project Materials (ample notice will be given)
**Independent Novels (student/ parent discretion)
Internet and Electronic Device Usage Requirements
** Internet usage is allowed only if parental permission is given by signature /Form MIS 5251
** Cell phones are allowed only if parental permission is given by signature /Form MIS 5338
** Cell phones are to be out only when teacher announces that class will use them for assignments.
** Students must also sign and agree to terms/ Form MIS 5337and MIS 5251
Electronic devices or app purchases are not required
Grading Procedures:
Tests = 30%
Writing assignments, Projects, and Presentations = 30 %
Quizzes = 20%
Homework and Daily Work=20%
**Supplemental Reading is required and graded under the 20 % homework category
** Extra Credit, if applicable, is not given to anyone with missing or incomplete work.
Homework Policy: Late homework will not be accepted due to the fact that the class goes over the information the
following day in most cases. Exceptions can be discussed when there is an issue.
Late Major Assignments: 20 points are deducted from final grade for every day late. Exceptions can be discussed
when there is an issue.
Essay Policies: In addition to a hard copy, all essays will be submitted to www.turnitin.com. A grade of zero will
result if a paper is not submitted online by the deadline. The student computers in my room may be used for this
process, and I am more than willing to assist.

Miscellaneous Information:
Students should refer to all policies outlined in the NHS Student Handbook and the Code of Conduct provided by
the Okaloosa County School District. Failure to comply will result in immediate disciplinary action.

Class calendar is always current on class Edmodo site.
Always ask questions (other people probably have the same question)
Students must have an excused absence to make up all work. All make up work must be completed within 5 days.
It is student’s responsibility to look up make-up work on calendar or ask for it.
I am available after school or by email for help or questions. Please ask if you need help.
Parent conferences can be set up through the guidance office.
We use many websites and apps in this class. Keep passwords on you at all times.
Please keep binder neat and organized in the order given above.
This syllabus must be shown to parents and then placed in front of class binder.
