AWWA is the leading resource for information about safe water and provides this information to water
professionals around the world. Just as AWWA is always striving to supply the most comprehensive and
informative material, we are always looking for new ideas and proposals for new products. AWWA will
consider proposals on all drinking water and wastewater-related subjects, and we are particularly
interested in manuscripts on operations, treatment, and sustainability. AWWA publishing offers these

This completed questionnaire will be evaluated by members of AWWA’s book review group. Reviewers
are selected for their expertise on the topic addressed by the proposal. They assess the proposal in terms
of technical soundness, timeliness, freshness of approach, quality of writing and organization, and
suitability for publication with AWWA.
The following information is required before any proposed work can be considered for development and
publishing by AWWA. Please respond to all questions as completely as possible.

Please provide a complete content outline or table of contents. Include a brief paragraph describing each
section and/or chapter, highlighting special points that will be of particular value and interest to the
reader.
Timeliness:
Describe any current, recent, or expected future events, trends, legislation, technology, etc., that support
the cause for publishing a book on the proposed topic at this time. Attach any documentation that
supports or helps prove your assumptions and beliefs.
Competition
This information is critical to the evaluation of the market potential, pricing, and fit of your book into
AWWA’s publishing program.
List, to the extent possible, any books that are presently in print and available that are similar or related.
Briefly describe the weaknesses and strengths of each book, and how your book will be superior in terms
of new material, timeliness of information, depth of coverage, organization, and treatment of material.
Include the author names, the name of the publisher, date of publication, current price, and size/page
count of each competitive book listed. If you are unable to find any similar or related books that are in
print, please explain why you feel this is so and why your book is needed or would be read. In this regard,
it would be appropriate to list similar books now out of print but still read and used.
Audience
Describe, to the extent possible, the basic, secondary, and other groups that would find your book
valuable and useful. Specify by professional titles, job titles, work functions, and work responsibilities. If
possible, provide accurate information about the actual numbers of people in each readership group you
identify (e.g., the number of water quality engineers, civil engineers, chemists, lab technicians, operators,
etc., employed in the drinking water industry).

Acceptance
If your proposal is accepted, you will receive a contract for publication that details major publication
milestones to be met, manuscript acceptance guidelines, and your royalty payment. All contracts are
negotiated between AWWA and the author. You will be assigned a project editor and asked to develop a
complete manuscript based on reviewer comments.
Manuscript Review
Once you have completed your manuscript, it will be reviewed in terms of technical soundness,
timeliness, freshness of approach, quality of writing and organization, and suitability for publication with
AWWA. AWWA will accept the work for publication, reject it, or offer conditional acceptance based on
the recommendations of the reviewers. In the case of a rejected manuscript, the author will be told the
primary reason for the decision.
Publishing Team Responsibilities
Responsibilities of the author include
• responding promptly to any queries or requests from AWWA editorial staff,
• adhering to the production schedule, and
• negotiating any outstanding editorial problems with contributors.
Responsibilities of the AWWA publications team include
• establishing and informing all authors of the manuscript’s proposed publication date and production
schedule;
• keeping authors informed of progress and plans, providing copyright assignment forms to authors, and
explaining AWWA’s policies with regard to copyright and permissions;
• providing substantive editing and copyediting for correctness, clarity, conciseness, and quality of
expression;
• reviewing substantive editing with authors;
• proofread and indexing; and
• making all decisions regarding cover and interior designs, typesetting, layout, artwork, printing, and
marketing.
