Choose one or both university courses based on made-in-Italy’s finest: cinema
festivals. Follow your artistic interests and enjoy a unique experience in Rome, home
to academy winners Federico Fellini, Roberto Benigni, Paolo Sorrentino, Bernardo
Bertolucci and other well-known personalities of the movie-making industry.
WHY AN AUDIOVISUAL WINTER COURSE IN ROME?




Italian arts, design, and fashion as a cultural background for your audiovisual studies.
Classes taught by internationally-renowned experts.
A friendly and international environment known for language studies and research (CIUTI,
EMT, AGORA, ANVUR).
The course participation provides the opportunity to access internships at international
festival and film production companies.
WHEN AND WHERE?
The Winter school will be held in Rome at UNINT University, Cinecittà studios and film festival
production offices from 14 December to 19 December 2015.
COURSES
The courses offered at UNINT Winter School 2015 are shown below.
Courses are held in English from Monday to Saturday, five and a half hours per day according to
the following schedule:
From Monday to Friday:
Creation and management of international film festivals: 9.30 - 11.30 / 11.45 - 13.15 //
14.15 - 16.15
Press release and promotion of international audio-visual festivals: 16.30 – 18.30
Saturday:
Creation and management of international film festivals: 9.30 - 12.00
Press release and promotion of international audio-visual festivals: 13.00 – 16.00
Delivery of certificates: 16.00 – 17.00
Students may attend one or both courses.
Students are required to attend at least 80 percent of class sessions to receive a certificate of
attendance. Final examinations are given at the end of each course; and a certificate of
attendance is granted (2 ECTS for Creation and management of international film festivals and 1
ECTS for Press release and promotion of international audio-visual festivals).

The course prices above include 10 hours of lessons per week, 3 hours of group studies, and two hours of individual
preparation. Travel costs, accommodation and meals are not included.

A special price is offered to students who attend both Winter School courses (700 Euro).
An additional reduction of 10 percent is also available for students of UNINT and our partner

REQUIREMENTS
Entry requirements
High school diploma.
English language requirements
A B2 level in English is required for all Winter School courses. If your native language is not English,
you must provide recent evidence that your command of spoken and written English is sufficient
to attend UNINT Winter School.
PRE-ENROLLMENT AND ENROLLMENT
Pre-enrolment must be done before 31 October 2015.
REGISTER FOR COURSES >>
The minimum number of participants necessary to hold a course is 9 students. The maximum is 25.
In case the number of applications exceeds the maximum, candidates will be selected on a FCFS
(first-come first-served) basis.
The first 25 pre-enrolled candidates per course will be invited via email to complete the enrolment
procedures before 30 November 2015. In the event of withdrawal of the applicant or incomplete
documentation, the following candidate on the waiting list will be informed and able to enroll.

CREATION AND MANAGEMENT OF INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVALS
The aim of the course of is to train cultural and tourist industry professionals capable of combining
culture and managerial skills, beginning with an overview of the history and organisation of the
entertainment industry in Italy.

The course will be divided in the subsequent modules:
HISTORY OF AUDIO-VISUAL CULTURAL EVENTS
History of cultural events, fairs and festivals in Italy and the world. Theatre and Pagan fairs; miseen-scène in the Catholic ritual; Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque fairs. Carnival. Birth of the
cultural event and of the festival. Historical, social and territorial references. The relationship with
the public in its various forms. Theory of the audio-visual festival. Audio-visual festivals and
cultural policies. The audio-visual industry in Italy and the world.
THE AUDIO-VISUAL FESTIVAL
Thematic lines, motivations and difficulties. The various types of festivals. The program. The
official selection, the special events and the retrospective. The other sections. The collateral
activities.
How a festival works. The various phases: conception, planning, realisation and assessment.
IDENTITY OF A CULTURAL EVENT
Recognisability and identity of the event; uniqueness of style and language; creation of a brand,
logo, trailer, gadgets, etc.
LOGISTICS AND TERRITORIALITY OF THE EVENT
Place, duration and operational procedurals in relation to the territory and public of reference.
Safety issues.
HUMAN RESOURCES, ORGANISATIONAL CHART AND CONSULTANCIES
Artistic direction, technical staff, scientific expertise and voluntary work.
SPACES, SET-UP AND TECHNICAL MATERIALS
Aesthetics and functionality. Promotion of the territory and accessibility of the event.
FUNDRAISING
Raising and management of public and private funds.
COMMUNICATION
Relationship with the media and analysis of the public. Advertising. Press office.

Contracts and accounting.

Handling and management of the guests.

Foundations, municipalities, bodies and institutions. The Italian and European legislation.
HISTORY OF CINEMA AND VISUAL ARTS
Cinema and contemporary visual arts. The concept of ‘celebrity’. The audio-visual industry in Italy
and the world.
VISIT TO CINECITTÀ STUDIOS (OPTIONAL)
Duration of the lessons: 25 hours + 5 hours in the lab

PRESS RELEASE AND PROMOTION OF INTERNATIONAL AUDIO-VISUAL
FESTIVAL
The aim of the course is to provide students with the basic traditional instruments necessary for the
promotion of an event or festival for cinema, TV or other forms of audio-visual expression.

The course will be divided in 5 lessons:
GENERAL NOTIONS OF PRESS OFFICE
Techniques for drafting a press release and managing journalists, introduction to cinema
journalism. The press office: roles and functions. Press agencies and editorial offices. The news
release. The communiqué for the editorial offices. Case histories: the launch of an event and
festival.
Writing techniques: the difficult art of writing. Practical writing advice. The ABC of writing a
communiqué. The rules: marketing communication and cultural brand. The message you want to
communicate. The fabrication of a news report. Writing a press release: appealing titles, an
effective release, creativity. Understanding the rules of the game. What is best not to
communicate, editorial lines, the logic of the media. Press agencies, editorial rooms and the web.
The mailing list. The press kit. Photos. Videos. Materials for the web. The print preview. The press
review. Gifts and gadgets.
PRESS OFFICE EVENTS
Meeting, press conferences and press tours. Promotional and communication strategies applied to
the cinematographic product. Groups exercises and press release and event simulations.
Discussions and in-depth analyses.
THE METHOD
The object of communication. The target. Focusing on a product’s strengths. The best methods
and materials to communicate them. The means (newspapers). Who communicates / what / with

DEALING WITH CELEBRITIES

Hospitality.
At the end of the course, the students will be expected to be able to create press releases aimed at
the communication of a film or festival, to offer the best possible reception to journalists, and to
prepare a professional press review.
