PhD on Schmallenberg infection in Ireland

Opportunity to study for a 4-year structured PhD in the area of Animal Well-Being & Health

This project will involve collaboration between Teagasc (Moorepark and Athenry), the

Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (veterinary laboratory service), the Irish

Cattle Breeding Federation (ICBF), UCD and TCD.

The project will investigate the Schmallenberg virus (SBV). The objectives of this project include: 1) publishing a literature review on the effects of SBV and SBV-like infections in ruminants 2) establishing the effects of SBV infection on dairy calf health, calving performance, reproductive performance and production 3) determination of the effectiveness of vaccination in reducing SBV-associated problems in dairy cattle, 4) establishing the effects of SBV exposure in suckler cattle and 5) investigating the effects of

SBV infection in naïve sheep flocks.

The position is initially a two-year Masters programme with the possibility to upgrade to a four-year Ph.D programme. The student must be a graduate with an honours degree in veterinary medicine, registrable with the Veterinary Council of Ireland.

The successful applicant will be based at Teagasc, Moorepark, Dairy Research Centre,

Fermoy, Co. Cork under the co-supervision of Dr. John Mee (Moorepark) and Professor

Michael Doherty (UCD).

Fellowship Stipend:

€22,000 per annum.
