Mental Health First Aid Course
Adult 3rd Edition
Mental Health First Aid – Two Day Courses
Developed by the Centre for Mental Health Research
Australian National University
What is Mental Health First Aid?
First Aid is the help given to an injured person before medical treatment can be obtained.
Mental Health First Aid is the initial help given to someone experiencing a mental health
problem before professional help is sought.
Overview
While people often know a lot about common health problems, there is widespread ignorance
of mental health. This ignorance adds to the stigma of mental health problems and prevents
people from seeking help early and seeking the best sort of help. It also prevents appropriate
support to colleagues and family members,
simply because they do not know how.
In order to help people provide initial support for someone with a mental health
problem, the Centre for Mental Health Research at the Australian National University
has developed a Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training course.
The MHFA course is a 12 hour course developed by Betty Kitchener and
Professor Tony Jorm with the aim to improve the mental
health literacy of members of the Australian community.
Who can do the course?
Any interested person can attend. However, this course is not recommended for people
presently experiencing disabling mental health problems, just as
General First Aid is not for people suffering a major injury.
Mental Health First Aid courses have now been conducted to over 20,000 participants. These
participants have been very varied, including teachers, nurses, case managers, social welfare
staff, employment agencies staff, personnel staff, members of the general public, and staff of
Commonwealth Govt. agencies such as Health & Ageing, Family and Community Services,
AusAID, Commonwealth Grants Commission, Australian Maritime Safety Authority, the
Federal Police and local government.
