Host-Pathogen Interactions
The course will provide a basic introduction to different pathogens and host immune
responses. This will be followed by an in-depth analysis of the immunological, cellular,
molecular and genetic mechanisms in pathogen biology and pathogen-host interactions.
Topics will include host innate and adaptive immune responses, parasite genome structure
and gene expression, antigenic variability, immune evasion, epidemiology and evolution,
population genetics and vector-pathogen interactions.
Each topic will be covered in a three-part fashion: 1) brief introduction of the pathogen life
cycle, 2) reading and discussion of assigned articles with a NYU faculty member that will lead
the discussion. This will help students understand and participate in the subsequent lecture;
and 3) a general review lecture by an expert on the topic followed by discussion with the
students. Speakers will include faculty from other universities and NYU School of Medicine.
Students are expected to participate actively in the discussion of the assigned research
articles.
