THICK SQUARE PLATES ON ELASTIC FOUNDATIONS

Asst. Prof. Dr. Riyadh J. Aziz, Asst. Prof.,Asst. Prof. Dr. Adel A. Al-Azzawi , Researcher Mustafa H. Al-Allaf, ,

Alnahrain University

This paper deals with linear elastic behavior of thick square plates resting on Winkler type elastic foundations with both compressional and tangential resistances. The finite element method with different isoparametric thick plate and brick elements are used to solve problems, which were previously solved by other researchers, by using finite difference method.

The objective of this paper is to develop and improved asphalt binder grading system for Iraq based on the principal of

Superpave and conventional tests which incorporating in software program. The rheological properties for the local asphalt binders were founded in two ways, the first one the binders weretests according to Superpave system, the second way by using theShell pavement design software packages (BANDS 2) at different loading time and frequency. The performance grade of the local binders produced from the three refineries (Daurah, Basrah and Baiji) founded to be PG 64-16 and the m- value (slope of log creep stiffness versus log frequency curve at specified temperature) determined by DSR (Dynamic Shear

Rheometer) and Shell software was compared, and A very good regression was obtained.

APPLYING DECISION MAKING WITH ANALYTIC HIERARCHY PROCESS

(AHP) FOR MAINTENANCE STRATEGY SELECTION OF FLEXBLE

PAVEMENT

Ass. Prof. Dr. Asma Th. Ibraheem , and Noor S. Ati , M.Sc., College of Engineering, Civil Engineering Department,

Al-Nahrain University.

This research aimed to develop methods and tools for supporting maintenance management system for transportation. This is done by using Multicriteria Decision Making Process techniques. Also analytic hierarchy process (AHP) were applied to evaluate the techniques that are used for maintaining the road pavements.

Software named AHPM (Analytic Hierarchy Process Model) was developed using MATLAB for flexible pavement. The first step in the AHP procedure is to decompose the decision problem into a hierarchy that consists of the most important elements of the decision problem. In developing a hierarchy identified the objective, factors and alternatives. The hierarchy model of a decision problem is the objective of the decision at the top level and then descends downwards lower level of decision factors until the level of attributes is reached. Each level is linked to the next higher level.

In this study the researchers conducted many personal interviews with senior engineers who have an experience in road maintenance projects. About 6 senior engineers were selected to conduct the interviews. Every engineer of those experts gave pairwise comparison matrices as weights of AHP process.

For the purpose of ascertaining the efficiency of the developed software (AHPM), it has been applied to a case study included the main street in Bagdad university, it has a length of (2.38) km and width of

(7m). The result of this application was that road requires an asphalt thin hot mix overlay.

ANALYTICAL STUDY OF CONCRETE SLAB COMPOSITE BEAMS'

Dr. Ahmed Farhan Kadhum, Building and Construction Engineering Depart. University of Technology

This paper presents an analytical study of composite beams (Concrete Slab at the top–I-Steel Section at the bottom) , the analytical investigation included the use of three dimensional nonlinear finite elements to model the performance of the composite beams strengthened with CFRP strips by using (ANSYS 8.0) computer program. The numerical results show very good agreement with experimental results, Finite element models of the concrete slab reflected in better way the experimental concrete crushing for the composite beams with stiffeners. For the beams without stiffeners it was noticed that the isosuface contour lines made slices normal to the x-z plane along the concrete slab (where the x-z plane is parallel to the concrete slab plane) and this reflected a longitudinal concrete slab failure while for the beams with stiffeners the slices were parallel to the x-z plane so the facilities of this program reflected the transverse and the diagonal concrete cracked slab failure.

Behavior of Deep Coupling Beam Under Cyclic Loading Using Plastic Damage Model

Asst. Prof. Ihsan Ali Saib al-Shaarbaf , Asst. Prof. Laith Khalid Kamil Al-Hadithy, PhD. Student Hussein Mohammed Ali Al-Bahadly,

Department of Civil Engineering, AL-Nahrain University, Baghdad, Iraq

In this paper a three dimensional finite element investigation of deep reinforced concrete coupling beams subjected to imposed inelastic cyclic deflection is conducted. The finite element analysis has been made by analyzing a deep beam picked up from available literatures. The selected beam was a conventionally reinforced coupling beam with an aspect ratio of 1.5. The beam was 600 mm long with a depth of 400 mm. The cyclic simulation performance of the selected beam was found using the plastic- damage model for concrete developed by Lubliner and Lee & Fenves . The model adopts the concepts of fracture – energy – based damage and stiffness degradation in continuum – damage mechanics . Two damage variables, one for tensile damage and the other for compressive damage . A yield function with multiple – hardening variable is introduced to different damage states . The uniaxial strength function are factored into two parts , corresponding to the effective stress and the degradation of elastic stiffness . A simple consistent scalar degradation model is introduced to simulate the effect of damage on elastic stiffness and its recovery during crack opening and closing . It was found that the F.E.M. model accurately predicts the experimental response under cyclic loading up to the yielding of the steel bars . The prediction is less accurate at post yielding stages .This difference is due to the severe damage of the concrete in tension and compression during loading cycles . Also the prediction of the damage region within the coupling deep beams matches the experimental results .

Cracks propagation (opening & closing ) and stress distribution during cycles were very well predicted specially the formation of the compression struts and its development into the concrete beams . The developing of the plastic – hinge zone was well predicted as compared to the experimental results . The load-displacement curve predicted by the F.E.M. model shows a close correlation with the experimental results within the inelastic range .

OPTIMUM DESIGN OF PILE- RAFT SYSTEMS

DR. ALAA CHASEB. GALEB ,University of Basrah-Departement of Civil Engineering, Muntadher Mohammed

Hasan Abbood

This paper presents a study of the problem of the optimum design of piled-raft foundation systems. The study has been carried out using a hypothetic problem and soil investigations of six sites locations in Basrah city to evaluate the adequacy of using the piled-raft foundation concept. PLAXIS 3D FOUNDATION software version 1.5 which using three dimensional finite element analysis method has been used, to perform the structural analysis. The problem is optimized using Hooke and Jeeves method with the total weight of the foundation as objective function and each of raft thickness , piles length , number of piles and piles diameter as design variables . It is found that the total and differential settlements decreases with increasing the raft thickness, the number of piles, the piles length, and the piles diameter. Finally parametric study for load values, load type and raft dimensions have been studied and the results have been discussed.

“Research Methodologies adopted in post –graduate studies candidates within the specialty of Architectural Engineering in Iraq

-

An analytical study of their features, implementation methods and tactics "

Lecturer-

Nawfal Joseph Rizco, Architectural Engineering Departement,AL-Nahrain University / Baghdad

The methodology witnessed a great development due to the development of different types of methodology and their ever increasing usages. As scientific research movement increased and its horizons diversified; the importance of this field of science increased as methodology multiplied in number and scientific specializations diversified for we find that one science seeks the assistance of different methodology as research topic requires. The first person who utilized the term " methodology was the German philosopher " Kant" when he split logic into two parts , the first ; principles methodology which searches conditions and correct methods to obtain knowledge ; second; methodology which pays a particular attention to specifying the general form or layout of each science and the method through which any science is created. Methodology searches into scientific research curricula and scientific methods discovered and used by scientists and researchers to access into reality. In the event that scientific research curricula are the methods that lead to discovering realities in different sciences through a set of rules and regulations that set up the course of reason in order to reach certain common resultants; methodology is that science which searches and analyzes these scientific methodologies. The research designated its core problem which encompassed the lack of knowledge about strategies or research methods adopted in achieving post –graduate studies

candidates i.e. (Master & Philosophy degrees) in the specialization of local Architecture. Henceforth, the research goal was drawn up and summarized by the following; " to detect research strategies adopted in the research within the specialty of international architecture and to specify a mechanism to inspect the degree of its consistency and particularity in the researches of post –graduate candidates studies i.e. ( master & Philosophy degrees) relevant to same specialty locally or domestically". the research hypothesis included " it is possible through revising strategies adopted in Architecture specialty research on the global level , to prepare analytical samples ( mechanisms) through which one can revise domestic post – graduate candidates studies from the aspect of comprehensiveness of their implementation methods, nature of their features and tactics followed to bring forth the scientific condition".

Combined Effect of Silica Fume and Steel Fiber on direct tensile strength of HPC

Asst. Prof. Dr. Maan S. Hassan1, Dr. Zeyad M. Al-azawi1, M.Sc. Muntadher J. Al-jalili1

In the design of structures, it is necessary to know about the tensile strength as well as the compressive strength and durability, which are considered to be the most important properties of concrete. This study presents an experimental and analytical evaluation of direct tensile strength of high performance concrete

(HPC) specimens produced by using silica fume and steel fiber. The main objective of this work is to develop the direct tensile strength of HPC and to show the applicability of previous relationships to predict the direct tensile strength of HPC from compressive strength. Four volume fractions of steel fiber with aspect ratio (fiber length/ fiber diameter) of 60 were used, 0, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 %. Incorporations of silica fume into the concrete were 0% and 15% as a cement replacement by weight.

Water/cement ratios was ranged (0.28-0.4) l/m3 with different amount of superplasticizer, and the reference slump was 170 mm. Compressive strength, and direct tensile strength tests were made on hardened concrete specimens. Results are compared to those from control specimens at 14 and 28 days.

The results showed that the presence of silica fume resulted in an increase in strengths. In addition, adding steel fiber slightly increased compressive, while tensile strength values were considerably increased. Also, results showed the direct tensile strength of HPC is proportional to the compressive strength; the prEN equation seems to provide a better prediction of the direct tensile comparison with other relationship.

Keywords: high-performance concrete; direct tensile strength; silica fume, steel fiber.

Predicted Rutting Reason in Paving Asphalt Layers for Al-Kut- Baghdad Rural Highway Using GPR

Asst. Prof. Dr. Abdulhaq Hadi A. Al-Haddad Eng. Ahmed Ali Abed ,Highway and

Transportation Eng. Dept./ College of Engineering, Al-Mustansiriya University

It is very important to determine the layer/ layers because the rutting distress in the highways pavement those suffer from rutting distress, so an accurate rehabilitation strategy is selected. In this study, the Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) used in detection of rutting distress that Al-Kut Baghdad rural highway suffers from, using 800 MHz antenna. The selected highway suffers from excessive rutting (2-4 cm). According to the processed GPR data, it is discovered that the sub-base layer causes the rutting in the pavement. The GPR results led to a need of conduction of a structural evaluation to the sub-base layer by conducting CBR test, the CBR result of the sub-base layers is (18.7 Mpa) while the Iraqi specification for roads and bridges

(SCRB, 2003) state that minimum CBR value for the sub-base type B is (35 Mpa), this result confirmed the GPR results.

This paper presents a parametric study for the resonant characteristics of the nanocavities implemented in a plasmonic demultiplexer designed for 1550 nm optical communication systems. The demultiplexer is based on silver-air-silver plasmonic waveguide supported by two nanocavities, one is used for a resonant tunneling-based channel drop filter while the other is used to realize wavelengthselective reflection feedback in the bus waveguide. The variation of resonance wavelength, quality factor, and reflection and transmission scattering parameters are calculated as a function of geometric parameters of the cavity. The simulation results can be used as a guideline to design ultra-compact wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) systems in highly integrated optical circuits.

Planar Spiral inductors are critical components to design in RF/microwave circuits. Since their design process is limited with a specific area, technological, and geometric parameters, it is considered to be the most difficult and time consuming task. In this paper an efficient optimization algorithm called Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is used in a proper way to find the geometric parameters of spiral inductor that give an optimum quality factor value for a given inductance and operating frequency. The result shows 14% improvement for Q with an inductance tolerance of

2%. The accuracy of the results is verified using ADS simulator

Photoacoustic Imaging for Tumor Detection

Mohammed A. Hussain&Arwa Amir Moosa, Department of Laser and Optoelectronics Engineering

College of Engineering, Alnahrain University, Baghdad, Iraq.

Photoacoustic is a unique imaging method that combines the absorption contrast of light or radio frequency waves with ultrasound resolution. When the deposition of this energy is sufficiently short, a thermo-elastic expansion takes place whereby acoustic waves are generated. These waves can be recorded and stored to construct an image.

This work presents experimental procedure of laser photoacoustic two dimensional imaging to detect tumor embedded within normal tissue.

The experimental work is accomplished using phantoms that are sandwiched from fish heart or blood sac (simulating a tumor)

3-14mm mean diameter embedded within chicken breast to simulate a real tissue. Nd: YAG laser of 1.064μm wavelength,

10ns pulse duration, 120-445mJ pulse energy has been used to induce the acoustic wave signal in these targets. The acoustic signal is then filtered and analyzed to construct the target image.

The analysis of experimental data and image construction has been accomplished using matlab software.

Convection Heat Transfer in Horizontal Annulus

Porous Media with Rotating Outer Cylinder

Prof. Dr. Ihsan Y. Hussain ,Asst. Lect. Raed G. Saihood,Mechanical Engineering

Department,University of Baghdad

A numerical investigation of mixed convection in a horizontal annulus filled with a uniform fluidsaturated porous medium in the presence of internal heat generation is carried out. The inner cylinder is heated while the outer cylinder is cooled. The forced flow is induced by the cold outer cylinder rotating at a constant angular velocity. The flow field is modeled using a generalized form of the momentum equation that accounts for the presence of porous medium viscous, Darcian and inertial effects. Discretization of the governing equations is achieved using a finite difference method. Comparisons with previous works are performed and the results show good agreement. The effects of pertinent parameters such as the Richardson number and internal Rayleigh number on the flow and heat transfer characteristics are considered in the present study. The obtained results depict that the Richardson number plays a significant role on the heat transfer characterization within the annulus. The present results show that an increase in Reynolds number has a significant effect on the flow patterns within the annulus. Categorization of the flow and isotherms regimes is established for various Richardson numbers.

Numerical investigation of mixed convective boiling heat transfer in a metal foam-filled cylindrical enclosure

Baghdad ,Baghdad, Iraq

The present work reports a numerical study of mixed convection with phase change in high porosity (ԑ~ 0.88-0.97) metal foam tube heated at a constant heat flux using the multiphase mixture model. A new effective thermal conductivity model of saturated metal foam was used. Transient and steady state behaviour of fluid flow and heat transfer under different parameters is analyzed and presented. Results show that liquid saturation decreased as the heat flux is increased and reaches its minimum value at the exit of the tube. It was found that the liquid velocity increased as the imposed heat flux increased, and then it will decrease when the two-phase zone covers the upper section of the tube. The variation of foam pore densities show that boiling begins earlier in the metal foam tube with higher pore densities. The effect of variation of the hydrostatic head difference and tube diameter is also examined. Comparison with previous work gave good agreement.

A 3-D finite-volume method has been employed in this study ( FLUENT 6.3

) with a k

 

(RNG) turbulence model to investigate the film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer along a flat plate (as a model of a turbine blade surface). Four different plate material properties (steel, carbon steel, copper and aluminium) with 30

0

angle of injection and different holes arrangements have been considered. Namely, a single and double row of holes with pitch-to-diameter ratio (P/D=3 & 6) with a hole diameter of D=10 mm has been studied numerically. The numerical results illustrate the cooling effectiveness and heat transfer characteristic variation with increasing injection blowing ratio BR (0.5 to 1) for different sections.

In terms of the film cooling performance, high BR does not enhance cooling effectiveness at all locations of the plate with injection. This study is utilized to highlight the importance of validation in CFD heat transfer simulations and sustaining a high degree of accuracy, aspects which are often grossly neglected in modern aerodynamics simulations with industrial CFD software. The numerical results have been compared with available experimental data and previous numerical results and very good correlation has been achieved. The effects of material thermal properties for the solid plate have been elucidated, in addition to variation concepts between the shell plate and the solid plate, on the film cooling effectiveness.

Removal of Chromium (VI ) from Wastewater by Ion Exchange Resin Amberlite

IR400 in a Batch System

Kamal S. Abdulmasih , Sarah K. Whab, Chemical Engineering Department, Al_Nahrain University, Iraq

Chromium (VI) is commonly found in large quantities in wastewater, which is toxic to animals , humans and known to be carcinogenic, and that is why the recovery of chromium content in wastewater is necessary for environmental and economic reasons. Experimental measurements have been tested for prepared solution and the effluent of the General Company for Electrical Industries in batch ion exchange system using strong base anion resin Amberlite IR400. The effect of various process parameters on chromium removal in terms of adsorption capacity was evaluated. The stated parameters were initial concentration of solute in the range 80-140 mg/ l, initial pH of the sorption medium in the range 4-10, mass of the resin 0.05-0.2 g, agitation speed 0-850 rpm and stirring time 2-90 min. The adsorption isotherms were described by means of the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms,

Freundlich isotherm was found to adequ- ately describe the equilibrium relation between the resin and liquid phase of the ion exchange reaction. Kinetic data were tested using pseudo first order and pseudo second order kinetic models. The result exhibit that the removal efficiency of prepared solution is higher than industrial wastewater .

Friction stir processing (FSP) has the potential for locally enhancing the properties of hypoeutectic Al-

4.2wt%Si alloy. A cylindrical tool with threaded pin was used. the effect of FSP has been examined on sand casting hypoeutectic Al-4.2wt%Si alloy. The influence of different processing parameters has been investigated at a fundamental level. Effect of (FSP) parameters such as transverse speed (86, 189, 393) mm/min, rotational speed (560,710, 900) rpm on microstructure and mechanical properties were studied.

Different mechanical tests were conducted such as (tensile, microhardness and impact tests). Temperature distribution has been investigated by using infrared (IR) camera; the thermal images were analyzed to point out the temperature degree on selected points. The results show that the heat generation increase when rotational speed increase and decrease when transverse speed increase. Image analysis of particle size distributions were used to quantify the level of particle refinement and the homogeneity of the second phase distribution. Hardness and impact measurements were taken across the PZ, and tensile testing were carried out at room temperatures. After FSP, the microstructure of the cast Al-Si alloys was greatly refined.

However, differences in microstructure have been observed throughout the PZ, which tended to be better refined and distributed on the advancing side than the retreating side of the PZ. FSP caused very little changes to he hardness of the material, while tensile and impact properties were greatly improved.

Study the effect of Anode position for Cathodic Protection in different soil conditions for buried Pipes

Assistant prof. Dr. Naseer A. Al Habobi, Eng. Shahad F. Al Rubaie, Chemical engineering department,Al Nahrain University, Iraq

In cathodic protection system the design of anode ground bed plays an important role since the current distribution and pipe potential will be affected by anode position with respect to the structure position. This paper describes the effect of anode position and a comparison has been made with other different positions for the same pipe coated and uncoated in different soil conditions. Contours maps for potential distribution are also obtained. The paper shows that coated pipe need less voltage to protect than if it is uncoated, dry soil needs more voltage than moisture soil, as the anode distance increase the pipe potential decrease. In this work it has been found that the best position 30cm distance from pipe that needs the least applied voltage from rectifier.

AL Nahrain University

Baghdad / Iraq

In this study, natural convection heat transfer from a single heated cylinder and three heated cylinders in an assembly of nine cylinders immersed in water is investigated at different heat flux values. This experimental study extends the range of Rayleigh number employed in the previous studies to ( 4.90 ×

10 12 *

L

≤ 1.61 × 10 14

). The assembly of nine stainless steel cylinders was assembled in a 3×3 array of square pitch with a pitch to diameter ratio (p/d) of 2. For the measurement of the surface temperatures, three cylinders (1), (2) and (3) in the assembly were selected to have heating elements. In the first group of tests, only a single cylinder at the center was heated by a variable power supply. The experiments were performed with seven different values of uniform heat flux ranging from 397.8 W/m² to 9867.6 W/m². In the second group of tests, an assembly of cylinders vertically immersed in the water tank was examined. In this case, three cylinders were heated. The experiments were performed for five different uniform heat flux values that ranged from 397.8 W/m² to 5013.3 W/m². Empirical correlations for the overall Nusselt number versus average modified Rayleigh number for these configurations are obtained and compared to other correlations cited in the literature. The experimental results of the present study on a single thin cylinder and an assembly of vertical ones are in a good agreement with previous studies.

Department, University of Basrah,Basrah / Iraq

This paper presents an efficient meshless method in the formulation of the weak form method for meshless local Petro-Galerkin method MLPG.The formulation is occurred by using an elliptic domain rather than conventional isotropic domain of influence. Therefore, the method involves an MLPG formulation in conjunction with an anisotropic weight function. In the elliptic weight function, each node has three characteristic indications that are major radius, inner radius, and the direction of the local domain. Furthermore, the space that will be covered by the elliptic will be less than the area of the circle

(isotropic) at the same main diameter. This means leaving many points of integration are not necessary.

Therefore, the computational cost will decreased. MLPG method with the elliptic domain is used in the problems of linear elastic fracture mechanism LEFM. MATLAB and Fortran codes are used in obtaining the results of this research .The results are compared with those presented in the literature.

SPECTROSCOPICAL DIAGNOSIS

Manal Radwan, Assistant Prof.Dr.Munqith Saleem Dawood

College of Engineering, Medical Engineering, AL-Nahrian university.

A new non-invasive fast method of electrical impedance technique, called electrical impedance spectroscopy was developed to detect skin cancer from benign nevi including e.g. Squamous (SCC) and basal cell carcinoma (BCC) . This method carried out by design and implement the four electrodes method as the measurement system. One pair of electrodes excites the Ac sinusoidal current of constant amplitude into the tissue sample of the human body, another pair of electrodes detect the potential difference between themselves, We can find the bio-impedance Z by Ohm's law.

Measuring applications require a frequency band of 1KHz to 1MHz and current amplitudes of up to

500 μA. For the ten cases diagnosed by this technique.

This paper describes generalized Kohonen’s competitive learning (KCL) algorithm with fuzzy and fuzzy-soft types called fuzzy

KCL (FKCL) and fuzzy-soft KCL (FSKCL). These generalized KCL algorithms use the competitive learning with soft competition and fuzzy c-means (FCM) membership functions.

However, most brain MRI images always present overlapping gray-scale intensities for different tissues, so these competitive learning algorithms are used for reducing medical image noise effects with a learning mechanism. They may be particularly helpful in clinical diagnosis. Two real case of magnetic resonance images are examined in this paper. The comparisons between these competitive learning algorithms are made; the performance including the accuracy (mean square error) and computational efficiency (number of iterations) are measured.

FS-CLA shows good accuracy and high performance. These segmentation results demonstrate that the proposed FS-CLA is useful for use in MRI segmentation as an aid for support diagnoses.

The effect of both ultrasounds with laser in medical imaging of the biological tissue has been studied in this paper. The laser penetration depth into the tissue and the localization of the optical measurement has been improved by applying the ultrasound (US) wave on the tissue in perpendicular direction to the used laser. Different wavelengths of incident laser light (405 nm, 532 nm, 650 nm, 808 nm and 1064 nm) were used with two US frequencies (1MHz and 3.3MHz). The results showed that, the applied acoustic intensity enhance the laser penetration into different tissues thickness and types. Different organs tissues were used in this experimental work.

Ground Reaction Forces Estimation using a Videography Technique

Basma A. Faihan and Dr.Sadiq J. Abass Med. Eng. Department , Alnahrain University

The purpose of this study is to compute the ground reaction forces during gait in the absence of force plates. The difficulties in using force plates for cerebral palsy patients were the urge to initiate this study. Level-walking experiments were performed using a two-dimensional motion analysis using a single digital video camera (Sony, 25 Hz) with two AMTI force plates. Kinematic data were obtained from the two-dimensional trajectories of reflective markers using SkillSpector software. The human body was modeled as 7 rigid segments. The mass and the center of mass of each segment were determined from anthropometric data. Butterworth low pass filter with cut off frequency of 4.5 Hz was used. Vertical ground-reaction forces obtained from the kinematic data were in good agreement with those obtained using the force plate. The computed and measured values of anterior ground reaction showed less tendencies. Cerebral palsy gait data showed relatively higher errors than normal gait data.

In this study, both the photoelastic, as well as the finite element methods, are used to analyze the stress distribution within mandibular first molar under forces similar to those that occur during mastication.

Two-dimensional model of tooth was created by the software AutoCAD. The coordinates obtained from the Wheeler’s text book were fed into a computer numerical control (CNC) machine to construct a model from photoelastic polycarbonate sheets. Completed model was placed in a transmission polariscope and loaded with static forces (35N-44N-55N) at 0° and 45° to the tooth axis. Stress can be quantified and localized by counting the number of fringes. The Principle stresses were calculated at different regions, crown, cervical and root. It was found that when the tooth had been subjected to vertical loads, the stresses were concentrated on the cervical region. The change of the force angulation

(45 ° to the long axis) increased the level of maximum stresses drastically however; the location of maximum stresses was similar, located at the cervical region. The finite elements results have been compared with the photoelastic results showed good agreement between both methods.
