ART 100: ART APPRECIATION

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Study and Appreciation of the various periods in the history of art and the
materials and methods used by artists.
REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS:
“The Power of Art” by Richard and Susan Lewis, 3rd Edition [you need this
book in order to complete the study guides]. This is the loose leaf edition. You
will need a 3 ring binder to put this in.
--There are 3 copies of “The Power of Art” 2nd edition on reserve in the library.
“Wreck This Journal” by Keri Smith [you need this book to do your hands on
projects in]
Please bring these two books with you to class daily. You will not be able
to complete your coursework without these books.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the completion of this course students will be able to:
*Demonstrate knowledge of the language used for discussing and evaluating art.
*Demonstrate knowledge of artist’s materials.
*Demonstrate knowledge of the purposes and functions of art.
*Demonstrate knowledge of the themes that artists use and the roles they play in
society.
TYPES OF INSTRUCTION:
Short lectures and discussions, Hands-on Projects, Projects in “Wreck This
Journal”, viewing of DVD’s and YOUTUBE videos, and Gallery Visits.
EVALUATION DEVICES:
Weekly study guides, daily in class projects, weekly quizzes, Wreck This Journal,
midterm exam and final exam.
CELL PHONE USE IS PROHIBITED IN THIS CLASS, if I see a cell phone in
use, you will lose your attendance and participation points for the day.
ATTENDANCE
--Attendance is 40% of your grade. This is an experiential class.
--You will be allowed 3 unexcused absences. More than 3 absences will affect
your grade.
--For an excused absence you need to e-mail me with the circumstances
and provide a doctor’s note for illness.
--I take attendance every day. If you arrive late or leave early, you will lose
points for that day.
--Missing this class because you have to do work for another class is not a
valid excuse. Don’t tell me you had to stay late in Math……..
--Student Athletes I am willing to work with you, but you need to present me with
a printed list of game dates the first week of the quarter. You will need to be
prepared to make up any work that you miss.
--All grading will be posted online through CANVAS. You need to check
this weekly. If you have questions, please send a message through
CANVAS
--Late work receives half credit.

A 96%--100%, A- 91%--95%, B+ 88%--90%, B 84%--87%,
B- 81%--83%, C+ 78%--80%, C 74%--77%, C- 71%--73%
D+ 68%--70%, D 64%--67%, D- 60%--63%, F 59%
QUIZZES and EXAMS:
Quizzes and Exams will cover material from the study guides, in class
discussions and videos presented in class. All quiz and exam dates will be
announced ahead of time.
EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENTS: Students will…..
1. Become more VISUALLY AWARE!
2. Be respectful of the teacher and their peers! [listen and do not talk during
lectures]
3. Be GOOD COMMUNICATORS
4. Ask QUESTIONS if confused
5. Show EVIDENCE of LEARNING outside the classroom!
6. Invest their time! Attend Class daily with their textbooks!
7. Take risks, learn to think creatively and appreciate the differences in
artists and the content of their work
8. Learn the visual vocabulary of art and use it to participate in class
discussions and incorporate it into gallery reviews
9. Think about art in a larger context than the classroom
10. Make the most of class time
11. Be a team player and contribute to class projects and discussions
12. Be prepared to have fun discussing art and making art!
