FOUQUE FRENCH, 1960’S OIL ON CANVAS “LE TEMPS DU TANGO” ARTIST: AL. FOUQUE INSCRIBED ON VERSO “DESTINIES” A POEM BY ALFRED DE VIGNY SIGNED & DATED LOWER RIGHT “A.F NOV ‘69” AND ON VERSO DIMENSIONS: (H) 11”/ 27cm (W) 12.5”/31cm FOUQUE FOUQUE ALFRED DE VIGNY (1797-1863) The verso of this picture “LE TEMPS DU TANGO” is inscribed: “Depuis le premier jour de la création, Les pieds lourds et puissants de chaque Destinée, Pesaient sur chaque tête et sur toute action”, which translated reads as: “Since the first day of creation, feet of each heavy and powerful destiny, weighed on each head and on any action”. The poem is an excerpt from Destinies, a collection of poems written by Alfred de Vigny (1797-1863) and published in 1864. De Vigny was also a dramatist and novelist and considered a distinctive voice within the Romantic Movement in France. The significance of the poem inscribed on the reverse, and taken together with the title, “Le Temps Du Tango”, or Time to Dance, the picture is thought to have been painted as a dedication to a friend or perhaps lover. There is also an indistinct hand written message and signed by the artist in ink, in the top left hand corner of the picture. The painting vividly captures the style and spirit of the sixties.
