Horses Say Neigh to Hayfever
Did you know that horses get hayfever, as well as humans? This common condition, sometimes
referred to as head shaking, is caused by an allergic reaction to pollen, mould spores and weeds
found in hay or straw. Because horses tend to suffer more flu like symptoms than humans, owners
often don’t realise that their horse is suffering with hayfever. HayMax™, a pollen barrier balm for
humans, has worked so effectively on some horse owners that they've tried it with success on their
horses too!
Horse owner Sarah says, “I have recently started using HayMax Pure for my horse's hayfever and it
has helped him greatly. He has a particular problem with rape seed and nettle pollen and this
product has relieved his symptoms from the rape seed pollen, and I anticipate further success
when the nettle pollen season starts. It would be fantastic to see bigger pots of this product for
horses.”
Melanie Morley of Polo Neck Designs in Newmarket wrote, “HayMax™ definitely improves the pony
I would say 70% … I used it at Ponies U.K. championships at Newark for the week and there was
definitely an improvement.”
So how does it work? HayMax is a natural, organic drug-free pollen barrier balm, applied at the
base of the nostrils and works by stopping pollen getting into the body. An independent study (on
humans!) in 2009 showed that HayMax "does trap significantly more pollen than an uncoated
nostril". [1]
Everyone can tolerate a certain amount of pollen without reaction. There is a 'trigger level', below
which they suffer no effects, but above which an allergic reaction occurs. HayMax is not a cure for
hayfever, but by blocking pollen from entering the body, it helps keep the sufferer hayfever-free for
longer. And as long as it keeps the sufferer below their trigger level, they will have no allergic
reaction, whether a human or maybe a horse!
And if you suffer from hayfever yourself, HayMax is a handy, portable option that can help reduce
the symptoms of hayfever. Because it has no drugs it has no drowsy side effects, and is suitable for
children, pregnant women and breast-feeding mothers.
HayMax™ retails at £6.99 for a 5ml pot, and is available from www.haymax.biz, on 01525 406600
and from Asda, Holland & Barrett, selected Boots, Tesco and Waitrose, and independent chemists,
pharmacies and health food stores nationwide.

and Aerobiology Research Unit (NPARU) University of Worcester WR2 6 AJ, July 20th 2009.
The study “aimed to assess the number of pollen grains that are trapped by the HayMax™ balm
when applied in a standard manner to the rim and the inside of nostrils compared with the amount
deposited on uncoated nostrils” and used adult volunteers (over 18 years). The experiment was
carried out on high grass pollen count days (50 grains per cubic metre or more daily average).
Professor Emberlin found that HayMax™ resulted in a “reduction to the amount of allergen entering
the nose”.
Why do we get hayfever?
Hayfever is a result of our immune system’s overreaction to pollen. Too much pollen stimulates the
bodies’ mast cells, which then break or degranulate, releasing mediators that include histamines.
These mediators can cause many symptoms including the unpleasant itching, red eyes, runny nose,
sneezing, sore throat, itchy roof of mouth and ears associated with hayfever.
