DANDENONG HIGH SCHOOL
INTEGRATION POLICY
Preamble
 Integration of students with disabilities and impairments in mainstream schooling is mandated by DEECD in
response to principles of social justice and Disability legislation.
 Integration students are those students who receive special funding within the school’s Global Budget to assist them
with their education
 Successful integration requires appropriate program planning and regular monitoring and evaluation of the
student’s progress
 Integration of students with disabilities requires a whole school focus in line with the Charter’s central focus – to
assist each student to achieve the best possible preparation for his/her future
Purpose
 To promote awareness of, and support for integration in the school community
 To ensure that school policy and practice facilitates a successful educational experience for students with disabilities
and impairments in mainstream schooling
 To encourage a whole school approach to curriculum development which is inclusive of all students
Implementation steps
 A Student Support Group [SSG] and Individual Education Plan [IEP] will be established for every student who
receives integration funding
 Each SSG to meet on a regular basis as required to monitor the progress of the student and review educational goals
set for each student
 The membership of each SSG shall be in accordance with accepted DEECD guidelines – and decisions made shall be
collaborative and recorded
 Teachers of integration students to be given adequate information to assist them to understand specific needs of
the student, while maintaining the student’s right to confidentiality. Issues of disclosure to be decided in the SSG
 The classroom teacher has responsibility for the preparation and implementation of teaching and learning programs
for all students in the class regardless of the ability of a student
 Support and assistance will be given to classroom teachers in developing, implementing and evaluating their
programs so that the needs of all students are addressed. The Integration Student Manager will be an initial
resource for support, information, and seeking appropriate assistance
 The Curriculum Coordinator, Domain Leaders, Level Coordinators, Welfare Staff, Literacy and Numeracy
Coordinators, Integration Student Manager and classroom teachers will share the responsibility for overall
curriculum programming for all students, including integration students
 The role of Integration Teacher or Integration Student Manager be allocated within the school with a time allowance
which allows responsibilities to be fulfilled
 Liaison with outside personnel who work with students with disabilities will be coordinated by the Integration
Student Manager and House Leadership Teams relevant to the student, to facilitate timetabling of access,
dissemination of information to teachers and input into, or attendance at SSG meetings
 Learning Support Aides will support students with disabilities to develop skills and knowledge which will lead to
greater independence, and greater participation in the whole school program and school activities. Learning Support
aims to facilitate inclusion, not exclusion, from school programs. Aides will work within the classroom or smaller
group learning environments wherever possible, to provide support without isolating or focussing unnecessary
attention on any one student

Learning Support Aides will assist the student with curriculum provided by the classroom teacher in conjunction
with other professional teaching and ancillary staff, as well as assist in achieving goals set by the Student Support
Group in line with the IEP for that student. Aides will not be responsible for program or curriculum design.
Evaluation:
This Policy will be reviewed as part of the school’s three year review cycle.
