Cathedral Isle of Man, Fundraising Campaign Manager October 2013 BACKGROUND INFORMATION CATHEDRAL ISLE OF MAN Peel is a city with an ancient and new Cathedral. The new Cathedral, built originally as a new parish church for Peel, had its foundation stone laid in 1879 and was eventually dedicated to St German in 1893. The delay in the dedication was for a variety of reasons, one of which was the argument as to whether the new church should become the Cathedral. This did not happen until 1980, more than a century after this had first been proposed. CATHEDRAL CAMPAIGN PLAN 2013-18 Since 1980 the parish church has had minor modifications. Plans are currently being developed to develop the Cathedral in a number of phases: o Phase 1 Music and Education Our vision is to become a centre of excellence for the great Cathedral Choral tradition, and to provide a welcoming and nurturing environment for education. The majority of this work centres on the creation of a Song School in the new Cloister, which will include dedicated rehearsal spaces for choristers, music scholars and instrumentalists, along with a comprehensive music library. In addition, a classroom will be installed for use in the schools programme. Other elements include: Accommodation for staff, scholars and four young ministry interns. A new pipe organ to be used in teaching, worship and performances. During this Phase of activity, we will also look to fund: Endowment for the Salary of the Director of Music The basic ground pattern of gardens Capital Cost: £2,600,000 o Phase 2 Worship Space To support the Cathedral’s primary purpose as a place of worship, we will invest in the building itself, creating a reflective environment for prayer, and a first-class venue for civic, social or cultural events. Developments include: Re-ordering and upgrading of furnishings and an improved sound system. Providing under-floor heating using green technology and levelling the floor. Narthex, forming the crèche/meeting room Capital cost: £2,100,000 o Phase 3 Visitor Experience We aim to enhance the visitor experience, creating an environment where pilgrims can explore the Christian story. This will be achieved through: Development of the seventeen gardens telling the story of St German’s legacy on the Island. A new refectory and gift shop, along with improved car parking facilities. The creation of a pedestrian hub, connecting different parts of the historic town. Capital Cost: £1,500,000 o Phase 4 Community Engagement Working with regeneration partners, we plan to enhance the conservation area of ‘Old Peel’ through a series of initiatives: Cathedral Isle of Man, Fundraising Campaign Manager October 2013 Opening up an entrance to the Cathedral with a Lychgate that doubles up as the City’s bus terminus. Refurbishing the Hall to improve the leisure and sports facilities, including new shower and changing rooms and a drop-in centre. Developing a public arts space and offering conference facilities. Capital Cost: £1,100,000 o Phase 5 Endowment A comprehensive Legacy Campaign will aim to raise £2.7 million in declared legacy pledges to build an endowment which will secure the Cathedral’s structural health for the future. In addition, the endowment will fund the annual salary of the Director and Assistant Director of Music and Choral and Music Scholars Capital Cost: £2,700,000 Cathedral Isle of Man, Fundraising Campaign Manager October 2013 THE CITY OF PEEL The population of the Isle of Man is some 85,000 people and the City of Peel is on the western side of the Island with this population being within a 15 mile radius. Peel is the fourth largest settlement on the Island and has a population of about 5,000 as well as being currently the fastest growing settlement on the Isle of Man. This makes it the smallest City with a Cathedral in the Church of England. Other small English Cathedral cities for comparison are Southwell (6,900) and Wells (10,400). Peel, however, is larger than St Asaph’s (4,000) and St David’s (2,000) in Wales. THE CATHEDRAL AS PART OF THE PARISH OF THE WEST COAST The Cathedral is located in The Parish of the West Coast which covers the city of Peel and the neighbouring villages of Dalby, Kirk Michael, Patrick and St John’s. There are five churches. THE STAFF AND MANAGEMENT OF THE CATHEDRAL Currently the staff of the Cathedral consists of the Dean and a Curate in his title post. (There are four non-residing canons and a further six honorary canons who are ordained, lay and ecumenical). There is also a Minor Canon based at the Cathedral, though with a diocesan education brief and responsibility for the neighbouring church of Holy Trinity, Patrick. There are also a number of Readers. The Cathedral is run by a combination of the Parochial Church Council, the Cathedral Chapter and a Cathedral Consultative Council (the latter combines representatives from P.C.C. and members of the Cathedral Chapter). The function of this body is to try and ensure a common vision by the Chapter and the Cathedral. The Parochial Church council consists of 12 elected members, ten Wardens, (two from each church of the parish), clergy, readers and ex-officio officers. Day-to-day management of the Cathedral is in the hands of the departmental heads of the Cathedral. They meet weekly, usually mid-morning on a Wednesday, to enable all to be aware of the direction the Cathedral is moving in and to implement PCC policy. THE CATHEDRAL QUARTER TRUST The CQT consist of 5 Trustees. The Trust is Chaired by the Dean and has been given a brief to work with the Cathedral to develop the site. It also works closely with the St German’s Music and Arts Foundation which particularly has a concern for the music life of the Cathedral.
