Tender Document Amnesty International UK – Media Awards Evaluator About Amnesty Amnesty International UK is a national section of a global movement of over three million supporters, members and activists. We represent over 230,000 supporters in the United Kingdom. Collectively, our vision is of a world in which every person enjoys all of the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights instruments. The Media Awards The Amnesty International Media Awards were established in 1992 to recognise the best in human rights journalism. The awards celebrate the breadth and quality of human rights reporting across the media - including broadcast, digital and print. Over the past two decades the awards have grown in prestige, recognising excellence in human rights reporting and acknowledging journalism's significant contribution to raising public awareness of human rights issues. Media Awards 2013 There were 11 categories in the 2013 awards, recognising newspaper, magazine, radio, TV, digital and student journalism with each judged by an independent panel. The winners of the 2013 Media Awards were announced on 12 June 2013 at a ceremony hosted by BBC News presenter Philippa Thomas at the British Film Institute in central London. The awards ceremony included a focus on Syria, with guests taking part in a new campaign calling for the release of Mahmoud Ali Othman, a citizen journalist from Homs detained by Syrian government forces over a year ago. Winners included: Anthony Loyd (Times) in the National Newspapers category for his coverage of the Syria crisis Eric Allison and Simon Hattenstone (Guardian Weekend) in the Magazines (newspaper supplements) category for their article on Neville Husband's abuse of teenage boys in a detention centre Ronke Phillips (ITV News London) in Nations and Regions for her report on witchcraft from Congo to London Ai Weiwei and Cheng Yizhong (New Statesman) in the Magazines (consumer) category for their issue of the New Statesman Media Awards Objectives Encourage the media to increase the quality and quantity of human rights coverage Develop and deepen relationships with a wide range of media Recognise publicly and support those journalists who are covering human rights stories The Role We are seeking to recruit a freelance consultant to work with key Amnesty stakeholders and associated parties to evaluate the Amnesty International Media Awards. The evaluation will: determine the extent the key objectives are being achieved assess whether the organisations investment in the Media Awards is justified advise on a strategy for future evaluations of the Media Awards Assess whether we are getting value for money against budget spend Make recommendations for how to improve achievement of objectives The role will report to one Events Producer Submissions Tender submissions should be received by 11 Feb 2014. The consultant will be a self-employed person responsible for taxation and national insurance or similar liabilities or contributions in respect of their fee. The successful consultant will not, therefore, be entitled to Amnesty International’s Staff Terms and Conditions and nothing in this agreement constitutes a Contract of Employment. Logistics The consultant would be required to work from their own home, or place of work, and to be willing to come to the Human Rights Action Centre in London on a regular basis to meet and coordinate with key Amnesty staff including our events team.
