Shaping Modern Values and Beyon
The International Society for Military Ethics is pleased to announce the theme for 2016’s annual
conference: “Women Serving in the Armed Forces: Shaping Modern Values and Beyond.’’
Keynote Address: TBD
The conference will take place Friday and Saturday, January 29-30 at the Loew’s Hotel in
Annapolis, Maryland, adjacent to the U.S. Naval Academy. We are working to have this classified as
an “official DoD Conference,” in order to ease travel restrictions and arrangements for military and
civilian DoD personnel wishing to attend. Vice Admiral Ted Carter (Superintendent, USNA) has
agreed to address our participants. The Theme and Call for Papers are listed on the following page.
Please note the revised (and final) dates for the meeting: 29-30 January 2016. Further information
will be posted shortly the website of our institutional sponsor, the Reilly Center for Science,
Technology & Values at Notre Dame University.
Single and double rooms are available at a government/conference rate of $100 per night
plus tax. A block of rooms has been reserved for ISME from Thursday through Sunday, 28-31
January 2016. Reservations must be made NLT 15 December 2015 to secure this rate, and can
be made via telephone or online.
Telephone the Loews reservation center at 800-526-2593 and identify yourself as part of the ISME
Conference Group (ISM 114) to obtain the group rate.
Book online at www.loewsannapolis.com, enter your arrival and departure dates as indicated, and
then click the box for “Special Rates.” Select “Group Rates” from the pull-down menu, and then
enter our group code (“ISM114”) in the field indicated.
Traditionally, women have been excluded from many roles in the military, most especially
combat roles. In recent years, however, that has all changed, first unofficially, and finally
officially: women have been de facto serving in combat roles for the last decade or so, and the
first female candidates have been or in all probability soon will be admitted to Marine Corps
Infantry training and the US Army Ranger School. ISME is pleased to accept papers on all
aspects of this historical development.
Questions to consider might include:
-
The right of women to serve in such roles
Gender related moral dilemmas: case studies
Embracing diversity: balancing practical considerations and modern values
Equality and equity in promotion
Moral injuries during and after war: impact of gender on healing
Submissions should be sent to richard.schoonhoven@usma.edu no later than 1 September, 2015.
Abstracts are acceptable, although full papers are preferred (but please also include an abstract);
please limit submissions to no more than 7,000 words. As always, we accept high quality
submissions in any area of military ethics.
