Arts funding update July 2013 New Grant to Mark the Centenary of WW I (UK) First World War: then and now is a rolling programme Between £3,000 and £10,000 The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has announced a new £6million small grants programme to help communities mark the Centenary of the First World War. First World War: then and now, will see £1million available per year for six years until 2019 via small grants ranging from £3,000 to £10,000. The awards will enable communities to conserve and share their First World War heritage and develop projects that improve understanding of the conflict. The grant will focus on: • The identification, recording and preservation of local heritage • The creation of community archives or collections • Exhibitions, trails, smartphone apps and creative material such as plays and music based on heritage sources, the idea is to create an enduring cultural and educational legacy for communities. HLF - Our Heritage Grants of between £10,000 and £100,000 Rolling programme Funding is available for projects that make a lasting difference for heritage, people and communities in the UK. The term 'heritage' refers to different things from the past that are valued and should be passed on to future generations and includes cultural traditions such as stories, festivals, crafts, music, dance and costumes. The British Film Institute – Film Fund (UK) The British Film Institute has announced that its Film Fund is open to applications. Through the fund a total of £18 million a year is available for filmmakers in the UK who are emerging or world class and capable of creating distinctive and entertaining work. BBC Performing Arts Fund - Theatre Fellowships (UK) Deadline 22 July The BBC Performing Arts Fund has announced that its Theatre Fellowships grants programme is open for applications. Theatre Fellowships offer bespoke placements within existing organisations and are designed to support individuals through the early stages of their theatre making careers. Through this scheme, the Performing Arts Fund hopes to increase the Fellows' skills through training and development opportunities, to raise their aspirations and to encourage their creativity. Rather than awarding grants directly to individuals themselves, the Fund is looking for applications from theatre companies, organisations, venues and festivals from across the UK to host a Fellow. Hilton in the Community Foundation (HCF) Deadline 30 July Up to £30,000 The Foundation aims to make a real difference to those most in need. It supports projects within the UK and Ireland that focus on Young People and Education, and Young People and Health. Golsoncott Foundation Deadline 31 July Up to £5,000 The Foundation aims to promote, maintain, improve and advance the education of the UK public in the arts generally and, in particular, the fine arts and music. Skipton Building Society - The Big 160 Appeal Deadline 31 July Up to £500 Financial awards are available for local community groups in the UK who are passionate about making life better for others and who need a bit of help in getting their projects off the ground. Strategic Touring Programme Projects over £10,000 are eligible for funding. Projects must take place over a maximum of three years. Deadlines: • Round 10: 9 August • Round 11: 4 October • Round 12: 29 November Grants are available to support collaboration between organisations, to encourage more people across England to experience and be inspired by the arts. Any individual or organisation can apply to the programme. Partnerships, networks and consortia can also apply Arts for older people grant programme Deadline 14 August To help bring the arts to older people in residential care Arts Council England and the Baring Foundation have jointly set up a £1 million fund. The Arts and older people in care grant programme, will support older people in residential care homes to take part in arts activities. The programme aims to support partnerships between arts organisations and artists with those helping older people in care homes. Proposals are welcomed from partnerships led by either residential care providers or arts organisations. Museums and libraries can also apply, provided the activity is arts-focused. Momentum Music Fund Deadline 30 August Between £5,000 and £15,000 PRS for Music Foundation and Arts Council England have announced the launch of this new fund to develop the careers of artists and bands. This is a £500,000 fund to develop the careers of talented artists and bands. Applications can be submitted by the artists themselves or those who are working on their behalf. BBC Children in Need - Small Grants Programme Deadlines 1 September, 1 December Up to £10,000 Funding is available to organisations that are supporting children and young people of 18 years and under who are experiencing disadvantage through: Illness, distress, abuse or neglect; any kind of disability; behavioural or psychological difficulties; living in poverty or situations of deprivation. The BFI Film Festival Fund is now open Deadline 2 September (festivals taking place up to the end of March 2014 Deadline 11 November (festivals taking place up to the end of September 2014) As part of the Audience Fund, the Film Festival Fund seeks to support festivals which provide a greater depth and breadth of film and increase choice to audiences across the UK as well as increasing audiences for specialised and independent British film. Funding for Schools to Purchase Musical Equipment (UK) Up to £2,000 Deadline 11 September Schools in the UK that wish to purchase musical instruments and equipment can apply for funding through the EMI Music Sound Foundation’s Instrument and/or Equipment Awards. The Foundation cannot fund retrospectively and schools are not eligible for financial assistance under this scheme if they have already purchased their instruments or if they do so before their application has been approved. Community Plus London Deadline 12 September Up to £5,000 The Santander Foundation and Mayor’s Fund for London, two of the capital’s leading charities, are have announced they have joined forces to launch a new initiative – Community Plus London. This new £100,000 scheme will provide grants to registered charities across the capital. Application forms are available in Santander’s 170+ London branches or can be submitted online. Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund (UK) Deadline 13 September Esmée Fairbairn has announced a new three year programme of support (2013-2016). The Fund aims to broaden access to, and use of, museum collections and focuses on time-limited collections work outside the scope of an organisation’s core resources. BBC Children in Need Main Grants Programme Grants of over £10,000 – no upper limit Deadline 15 September BBC Children in Need distributes the funds raised each year as grants to organisations that work with disadvantaged children and young people in the UK. The focus is firmly on children and young people experiencing disadvantage. They fund organisations working to combat this disadvantage and to make a real difference to children and young people's lives. BBC Performing Arts Fund (UK) Up to £5,000 Deadline 16 September Through this fund, community arts groups can apply for grants to carry out training, attract new audiences, encourage new members and raise their profile in their community including: • Sending key members of a group on a training course • Running workshops with the intention of encouraging and attracting new participants to join in • Provide a facilitator to run a workshop in collaboration with schools or community groups • Create a performance partnership with another group in the group's community, eg another theatre group, a dance/music group or a school etc. Idlewild Trust Deadline 20 September The Idlewild Trust is a grant making trust that supports registered charities concerned with the encouragement of the performing and fine arts and crafts, the advancement of education within the arts and the preservation for the benefit of the public of lands, buildings and other objects of beauty or historic interest in the United Kingdom. Funding for Youth Music Making Activities (England) Deadline 3 October Up to £250,000 Grants are available to support projects that provide music-making activities for children and young people, especially those young people in challenging circumstances. Youth Music will fund non profit-making organisations committed to music-making activities for children and young people up to 18 (or up to 25 if they have special educational needs, disabilities or are in detention). The Austin and Hope Pilkington Trust: funding for work with children and young people Deadline 1 November Between £1,000 to £3,000 For registered charities undertaking projects in the UK. The category for 2013 is Children and Youth. Looking further ahead, the category for 2014 will be Music and the Arts (with deadlines of 1 June and 1 November 2014). Wellcome Trust - Arts Awards (UK) Deadline small and medium sized projects 1 November Up to £30,000 The Wellcome Trust is inviting organisations and individuals to apply for funding through its Arts Awards. The Arts Awards support projects that engage the public with biomedical science through the arts including dance, drama, performance arts, visual arts, music, film, craft, photography, creative writing or digital media. Wallace & Gromit’s Children’s Foundation (UK) The Foundation has announced that its grants making programme will re-open for applications in October 2013. The Foundation supports projects in children’s hospitals and hospices throughout the UK to enrich and enhance the lives of patients. Projects that could be considered by the Foundation include amongst others: arts, music, play and leisure programmes. Theatres Protection Fund (UK) Applications can be submitted at any time Up to £5,000 The Theatre Trust has announced that it is seeking applications through its Theatres Protection Fund for projects that address urgent building repairs, improve operational viability, introduce environmental improvements and which enhance physical accessibility. To be eligible, applicants have to own or manage theatres with titles or signed leases of more than 5 years on buildings. Disabled People's User-Led Organisations (DPULO) Programme- Facilitation Fund Up to £30,000 - no minimum The Disabled People's User-Led Organisations (DPULO) Facilitation Fund’s aim is to provide financial support to DPULOs that they otherwise could not easily secure. Co-operative Membership Community Fund Grants between £100 and £2,000 The Fund provides grants to voluntary groups, community groups and local charities throughout the UK. Paul Hamlyn Foundation Arts Programme The Foundation is currently accepting applications under its Arts Open Grants Programme from formally constituted groups. Wakeham Trust Grants between £75 to £750 Groups of individuals as well as small community and voluntary groups within the UK that want to improve their communities can apply for funding through The Trust. They are particularly interested in supporting community arts projects as well as other neighbourhood and community projects. Applications can be made at any time. The Steel Charitable Trust Grants Grants of between £1,000 and £25,000 Applications can be made at any time. The Steel Charitable Trust is a grant-making trust supporting general charitable purposes. Grants are made to registered charities in the UK within the areas of arts and culture. Garfield Weston Foundation The Garfield Weston Foundation makes around 1,500 one-off grants per year across the UK. Its priority areas include the arts, community, education, welfare, medical, youth, religion and environment. Investment and contract readiness fund The £10m three year Investment and Contract Readiness Fund on behalf of the Office for Civil Society is open. The Fund will support social ventures to build their capacity to be able to receive investment and bid for public service contracts. Foyle Foundation Small Grants Programme Small charities operating in the areas of the arts and learning that have an annual turnover of less than £100,000 per annum can apply for funding of between £1,000 and £10,000 through the Foyle Foundation’s Small Grants Programme. Esmee Fairbairn Foundation Arts Strand Deadline ongoing Arts interests are: • Sustaining the viability of the arts sector through multi-year funding • Smaller grants to support organisations or projects which are testing out new ways of working • Providing funds to specialist infrastructure organisations to pass on to organisations • The development of emerging artists, emerging practice and new and more sustainable business models. • Arts organisations working with harder to reach groups and/or addressing difficult issues Digital R&D Fund for the Arts (England) Up to £125,000 Rolling basis until 30 December 2013 NESTA, the UK’s Innovation Foundation, has announced the launch of a new £7 million Digital R&D Fund for the Arts. Grants are for collaborative partnerships between arts organisations, technology providers and researchers. Chapman Charitable Trust The majority of grants are of either £1,000 or £2,000. A few special projects receive £6,000. Deadline continuous rolling programme The Trust supports charities in the areas of social services, culture and recreation, education and research, health, environment and heritage. London Community Foundation The Foundation have host of grant opportunities for voluntary and community sector groups in Lewisham. News Google Launch Learning Hub for UK Charities Google has launched a free initiative that intends to help 30,000 small and medium-sized charities enhance their fundraising capabilities by improving their digital abilities. The Charity Commission, the regulator for charities in England and Wales has launched a new tool to help charities find umbrella and infrastructure bodies offering tailored advice and support. £500,000 "Grow your tenner" Localgiving.com campaign The London Community Foundation announce an exciting new initiative from their online fundraising partner, Localgiving.com. Local charities and community organisations across England are being offered the opportunity to participate in its £500,000 "Grow Your Tenner" campaign. Big Society Capital A new financial institution set up by the UK government to finance charities and community groups has been launched. Big Society Capital will have £600million, of which the majority comes from unused cash in bank accounts that had been dormant for more than 15 years. The fund will back social enterprises that prove they can repay an investment through the income they generate. Think Big In partnership with the National Youth Agency and UK Youth, O2 has launched its Think Big social action programme to support young people in the UK. It’s designed to empower young people (aged between 13 and 25) who want to make positive changes to their communities.
