Miss America’s National Day of Service Presented by CMN Hospitals Date: April 18, 2015 Website URL: NationalServiceDay.org (being developed) Concept: On April 18, the Miss America Organization will hold its first annual National Day of Service presented by Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Miss America contestants across the country will join forces with their friends and family in a day of service. The inspiration for this national event began last year in Atlantic City, NJ when the 53 national contestants led by Mary Haskell volunteered at the AC Rescue Mission working the prep and service lines in the kitchen, meeting with mothers and children living at the Family Life Center and assisting with the replenishment of the food pantry. Now, contestants and volunteers in the Miss America program across the country will actively participate in projects with a goal to improve the quality of life in the communities they serve. From volunteering at a CMN Hospital, cleaning a park, beach or neighborhood, assisting youth and senior organizations, visiting those confined to nursing homes or collecting clothes, stocking food pantries or feeding the homeless. These are only a few of the activities that may be planned on this special day to salute volunteerism and community service. Local CMN Hospital Participants will not only be asked to join Miss America in the service opportunity but to fundraise $1 for every hour they serve. These funds will be given to their local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital as a tribute for the tireless community service offered day and night by each of these hospitals. Fundraising Goal: $300,000 Fundraising Distribution: CMN Hospitals - $210,000 (70%) MAO States - $90,000 (30%) Fundraising: Each state will be asked to find 20 current or past Miss America program contestants and volunteers to serve as team captains. Each team captain will register their team on NationalServiceDay.org, decide what service project their team will be doing for the day, and how many hours their team will be serving. Once the team has been registered, the team captain will find 10 friends or family members to go to NationalServiceDay.org and join their team. They will explain that each team member is committing to help with the service day and fundraise for CMN Hospitals. Each team member, including the team captain, will ask 10 people to donate $1 per service hour. Fundraising simplified: State Executive Directors – Find 20 contestants (past or present) and/or volunteers in your state to lead their own service teams. Team Captain – Find at least 10 people to join you in your service day experience – any service activity of your choice. All Participants – Find at least 10 people to donate $1 for every service hour (number of hours predetermined by the team captain). Example theoretical fundraising dollars: On average, we estimate participants will serve between 3-6 hours. This means an average donation of $5 will be “the ask” from each participant to their donors. 53 state programs x 20 teams each x 10 team members x 10 donors x $5 donation = $530,000 potential Example Site: http://nationalserviceday.org Website Design and Content: We are working to develop a custom design and site content. Miss Georgia needs 20 Team Captains that will each recruit 10 Team Members! Each Team Captain will choose his/her own service project and his/her 10 Team Members.
