Dear Chairmen, Program Directors, Clinical Faculty and Vice Presidents of Medical Affairs:

MedStar Health Research Institute and MedStar Health Academic Affairs are pleased to offer a combined Medical

Education Research and Leadership Education program, in conjunction with the Association of American Medical

Colleges (AAMC). This program is focused on the scholarship of medical education, and leadership in academic medicine. Ideal applicants are clinician educators who have a career trajectory focused on academic medicine.

This is a 2-year longitudinal program. The course will begin in February, 2016 and concludes in January, 2018. The first year of the program focuses primarily on the scholarship of medical education, and the curriculum includes didactic sessions, small group learning, journal clubs and applied research. The second year of the program focuses on developing as educational leaders, and incorporates an applied leadership focus in addition to continuation of a scholarly project. Participants will be expected to participate in all monthly sessions, and will assume progressive leadership responsibility throughout the course including mentoring other participants and medical students engaged in educational research. Participants will receive AAMC certifications in both Medical Education Research (MERC) and

Leadership Education and Development (LEAD).

We are enrolling a cohort of six participants into the two-year program. Applicants should be clinical teaching faculty who have a career trajectory focused on academic medicine, teaching, and medical education. All professions and disciplines are encouraged to apply.

The schedule for the course is attached. Applicants must commit to engaging in all aspects of this program, and written support must be provided by both the applicant’s Chairman and Vice President for Medical Affairs. The application includes a one-page draft project description to be submitted with the enclosed application form. All applications are due to Academic Affairs no later than October 9, 2015.

We hope that you will consider applying for this program. If you have any questions or if you would like to discuss the details of the program, please feel free to contact either myself or course co-directors Dr. Neil Weissman (202-877-0223 or Neil.J.Weissman@medstar.net

PROPOSED PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This course requires each participant to complete a hypothesis-driven scholarly project by the end of the program.

The initial months of the program are focused on developing your project topic and intervention. This application proposal helps the reviewers to assess what type of educational scholarship you might be interested in; however, it

does not commit you to a specific project. We are seeking a project idea that will allow us to understand what your scholarly interests are.

If you were to propose an educational research project today, what would it be? What would you ultimately want to accomplish with the project?

How would this project address a problem or strategy that you currently have in your program or at your institution?

What barriers would you anticipate in implementing this project?

In addition to your time, what resources would be required to complete this project?

How might you evaluate if your project has ultimately made an impact on your program and/or your institution?
