Council on Undergraduate Education Year-End Report CUE: Proposals Approved by the Senate in AY 2013/2014 November 2013 Curriculum Proposals for Senate Action BUS Add catalog language describing the Pre-MBA program. Like the Pre-Law program and Pre-Med program, this is not a degree program (not a major or minor), but consists of advising, recommended courses, and other opportunities that support students who want to go on to do graduate level work in business. WLC Drop many courses, predominantly in Italian, Latin, and German. These courses have not been offered in many years and the department lacks the resources to offer them in the foreseeable future. CUE Curriculum Action Reported to Senate SWK Change course descriptions for SWK 484 and 486 (Social Work Practicum I and II), reducing the number of hours spent at the practicum site from 250 to 225 for each course. This change corrects a long-standing error in the course descriptions: they state that students will spend 16 hours per week at their practicum sites, which, multiplied by 14 or 15 weeks, does not add up to 250 hours. Thus, the change makes the course descriptions self-consistent. 225 hours is still well above the 150 hours required for a 4 credit course. December 2013 Curriculum Proposals for Senate Action LIN Add a new course, LIN 537 Iconicity and Depiction, and change the list of Linguistics minor electives to include LIN 537 and LIN 595. Change minor requirements: students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 in their Linguistics coursework. THE Add a new course, THE 250 Dance and Fundamental Movement Activities, and change the Dance minor and Theatre major to include this course. Although technically new, THE 250 really represents the transfer of some dance related activities from the PER department to the THE program, following the migration of the Dance minor from PER to THE last year. Some sections that were previously offered under PER 224 Activities will now be offered as THE 250. February 2014 Curriculum Proposal for Senate Action GOV Add a new course, GOV 355 Mock Trial Experience, including it as an elective for the Government major. Change pre-major requirements for Government major and minor from “GOV 101 and 102, or GOV 110” to simply GOV 110. [GOV 101 and 102 were eliminated from the catalog last year in favor of the combined course, GOV 110, but the old option was left in the major/minor requirements for the benefit of students who had already taken these courses; as these students have moved through the program, it is no longer needed.] Adjust the number of pre-major and free elective credit hours to accommodate this change. March 2014 Curriculum Proposals for Senate Action STM Revise three Biology courses (BIO 201, 321, and 202). The first of these courses will change from “Research Methods in Biology” (3) to “Research Methods in the Sciences” (4), a course designed to satisfy science majors’ GSR 230 requirement. Change the Biology major to require an internship (BIO 202) and a capstone (BIO 403), and to clarify the fact that MAT 130 counts as GSR 104. Make small changes to the CHE and MAT majors to reflect the change in credit hours for BIO 201, which serves these majors as well as the BIO major. HIS Add a new course, HIS 492 Senior Seminar I, and change HIS 493 to Senior Seminar II, so that together they form a year-long senior capstone sequence. Drop the prerequisites from HIS 102 and HIS 112 to permit more flexibility in students’ course scheduling. CUE Curriculum Actions Reported to Senate ART Change ART 236 from Digital Media Production Robotics and Interactivity. Make minor revisions to the Art and Media Design major and Digital Media minor, to accommodate this course change. SOC Change SOC 320 Field Experience (3) SOC 450 Internship Seminar with Field Experience (4), adding a classroom component in order to integrate knowledge from readings and internship placement work. April 2014 Curriculum Proposals for Senate Action ASL Add ASL 410 Foundations and Practices in ASL Analysis and Criticism, and divide ASL 314 American Sign Language Literature into two courses, ASL 314 and ASL 315, which focus on Narratives and Poetry, respectively. Drop ASL 410 Practicum. Change ASL 304 and 305 from skill-specific courses on fingerspelling and non-manual signs to ASL Data Analysis and Applications I and II. Revise the ASL major to incorporate the added courses and course changes above, and to take advantage of coursework offered by the Linguistics department. BUS Add two new courses, BUS 321 Advertising & Branding and BUS 422 Marketing Strategy. Make minor changes to ACC 202 and 331. Reduce required GPA from 2.75 to 2.70 for Business Administration and Accounting majors and revise the Business Administration major – in particular, the Marketing concentration, to incorporate the two new Marketing courses. Drop minors in Economics and Finance and revise the minor in Business Administration so that it includes concentrations, including Economics and Finance. DST Add DST 101 Introduction to Deaf Studies, making it a pre-major requirement. Change DST 205, 301, and 498 – the latter two changes create a two semester Senior Thesis sequence. Revise the DST major to incorporate the changes, above, change some DST courses from “elective” to “required”, and add more options for required related courses. Revise the ADP-DST online program, including changes that parallel those to the regular DST major, and add catalog language about ADP to the DST program description. ENG Add six writing courses: ENG 250, 260, 345, 360, 365, and 370. Drop several courses (not offered in many years/related to the old general studies program): ENG 103S, 120, 121, 203S, 204S, 205H, 206H, 381, 396, and 397. Change 16 courses – mostly editorial changes and standardizing prerequisite language, but also revising ENG 323 and 324 so that they can more easily be cross-listed with GSR. Make ENG 250 Introduction to Public and Professional Writing a pre-major/minor course for the English major, English minor, and Writing minor. Adjust the electives list for the English major to accommodate the changes, above, and to eliminate elective distribution requirements. GSR Change GSR 110 Career Development from (0) credit to (1) credit, expanding it from 3 weeks to 15 and expanding the course description and content. Revise the GSR program description, including the total number of credits for GSR. ITS/PHY Replace ITS 351 with ITS 252 Introduction to Web Technologies; drop ITS 432. Revise IT major, adding MAT 142 as a required related course and giving a clear alternative for students who do not satisfy the ACT/SAT requirement for admission to the major. Change PHY 121 Earth Systems and Processes (3), which is currently offered in tandem with a 1-credit lab; the courses will be combined into one 4-credit course, in order to facilitate cross-listing with GSR 230. MAT Add two courses: MAT 142 Introductory Probability and Statistics for Science and Information Technology, and MAT 403 Senior Capstone in Mathematics. Revise the Mathematics major (to require MAT 403) and adjust the total number of credits accordingly. WLC Add SPA 439 Mexican Civilization and revise SPA 406 Contemporary Spanish and Latin American Literature, adding a course description and changing prerequisites. Restructure the SPA major and minor, requiring a set of four core Spanish courses and adding coursework in another foreign language.
