The volleyball team gives student-athletes valuable experience in several life skills, including (but not limited to) leadership, teamwork, academic excellence, sportsmanship, communication, and pride in achievements. 2. Mission Statement The Lady Knights of Metro Tech will compete in the Arizona Charter Athletic Association. The spirit of competition will include sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership, communication, and pride in achievements. Student-athletes will be role models for the Metro Tech student body, not only in athletic excellence, but behavior and academic excellence. Studentathletes will carry their experiences from the court to the classroom and life. 3. Program Philosophy The philosophy of Metro Tech Volleyball is to provide a safe, but highly competitive, learning environment for studentathletes. Throughout participation in the volleyball program, student-athletes will be coached in athletic and life skills. Student-athletes will build a strong base around academics and athletics that will be a foundation for a successful career in both post-secondary education and the work force. Emphasis will be placed on work ethic and sportsmanship, not winning. Student-athletes will work towards a common goal of success throughout the season. The volleyball team will strive to be as competitive as possible, and while winning is encouraged, students will be coached to see the small victories throughout the season, no matter the outcome of individual matches. 4. Player Responsibilities Players are responsible for: Personal attire and equipment for practices and games ~ This includes, but is not limited to; practice uniforms, lockers, locker rooms, volleyball equipment, the MTHS gym, and individual needs (i.e. water bottles, asthma inhalers, etc.). Maintenance of school uniforms and equipment ~ This includes, but is not limited to, game uniforms, lockers, locker rooms, volleyball equipment, MTHS and other gyms, and individual needs (see above). Maintaining passing grades in EVERY class they are enrolled in (regular education AND CTE programs) Communicating with the coach about scheduling conflicts and/or missing practices/games Committing 100% to Metro Tech Volleyball (scheduling, practices, games, teammates, coaching, etc.) 5. Player Expectations The Lady Knights of Metro Tech will be expected to adhere to norms in the following categories: a. Practice Times: a schedule will be created that will give specific times of each practice. Schedules will be subject to change, dependent on the needs of the school, the team, and also when flexibility is necessary. If practice times are not adhered to, consequences will be implemented. A1. If student-athletes are not present at school on the day of a game or practice, the student-athlete may not attend that day’s game/practice. Rationale: You are a student first, an athlete second. If you are not going to be at school to do your work, you do not get to participate in the rewards (activities). This goes hand-in-hand with the No Pass/No Play guidelines. You must be performing in the classroom in order to perform on the court. ****Please remember that attendance is taken daily; if you are absent, there are consequences. Please see section 6 for details.**** b. Academic Performance and Development: studentathletes will be expected to maintain a passing grade in all PUHSD courses (including CTE programs). Student-athletes who do not meet the “No Pass, No Play” requirements of PUHSD will not be eligible to participate in athletic competitions for a specified amount of time. c. Behaviors: 1. on MTHS campus: student-athletes are expected to behave in the manner appropriate to a student-athlete, role model, and campus leader. Excessive disciplinary action required outside of the volleyball court will require disciplinary action in volleyball as well. 2. traveling to and from scheduled competitions: student athletes will be expected to maintain the cleanliness of PUHSD vehicles. Inappropriate activities (including, but not limited to, fighting, illegal activity, etc.) will receive disciplinary action. 3. at team functions (such as awards ceremonies, team meals while traveling, etc.): student-athletes will conduct themselves in a manner appropriate to representing PUHSD, Metro Tech, and the volleyball team. Student-athletes behaving in a manner potentially damaging to any of the above-named groups will receive disciplinary action. 4. at games (home or away): student-athletes will represent PUHSD, Metro Tech, and the volleyball team in a positive manner at all competitive matches (either in a player or spectator position). Student-athletes behaving in a manner potentially damaging to any of the above-named groups will receive disciplinary action. 5. in dealing with the team (in all situations): student-athletes are expected to demonstrate a positive attitude and effective communication skills when dealing with issues among teammates. Student-athletes have a responsibility to the team (teammates and coaching staff) and are expected to act in a way that would help the team reach its goals. d. Dress Code: student-athletes will adhere to district and school policy relating to attire at all times (including, but not limited to, practices and games). Student-athletes not found in compliance with district and school policy will receive disciplinary action. e. Use of Illegal Substances: tobacco, alcohol, and other illegal drugs are forbidden in all PUHSD campuses, buildings, and vehicles. All substances are illegal for use by underage student-athletes. Use of illegal substances will not be tolerated, and any student-athlete found to be using these substances will be removed from the team. f. Transportation To/From Competitions: studentathletes will travel to and from competitions with the team in a district vehicle, chaperoned by the coach. If a student-athlete and her parent wish to make arrangements for another mode of travel, these must be made ONE WEEK PRIOR TO the competition, and may only be approved by the office of the Athletic Director. Proof of arrangements must be provided to the coach in order for the student-athlete to leave with the specified appropriate adult. g. Game Conduct: student-athletes will conduct themselves in a sportsman-like manner at all competitions, whether home or away. Student-athletes will adhere to Association rules for speaking with game officials. Student-athletes will receive disciplinary action if they are found to be out of compliance IN ANY WAY. Further Player Expectations 1. All players are expected to attend every practice. Exceptions: 1. Injury/Illness Discuss with your coach PRIOR to the start of practice; make sure that if you go to the doctor, you get a note. 2. Family Emergency Discuss with your coach PRIOR to the start of practice; if you are not attending school, please contact her electronically. 2. All players are expected to have a positive attitude towards all teammates and coaches at practices and games, as well as opposing teams and coaches and referees. All players will have the same positive attitude towards HARD WORK. If you do not have a positive attitude, our team suffers. We have a big goal this year. We need everyone to be a part of reaching this goal. We have to stay together as a team. This is MUCH easier to achieve if we are all positive. If you have a problem with someone or something OUTSIDE of practice, LEAVE it there. We need to stay focused during our practices and games. If you have a problem with someone or something AT practice, talk to that person or your coach before practice starts. We need to take care of issues before work starts so that we can dedicate all of our time to the team. 3. All players are expected to communicate with the coach about any concerns or questions about the team. This team belongs to everyone on it, but the coaches are in charge. If you have a problem with anything relating to the running of our team, talk to the coaches about it. We need to fix the problem, and it’s easier if people aren’t talking about it behind our backs. Help us fix the problem before it gets out of hand. Game information The day before a game: Get hydrated. Drink a gallon of water. Eat a protein- and complex-carbohydrate-rich dinner. Don’t stuff yourself, but eat a healthy amount. (Get some veggies in there too…) o Proteins: Lean meat (chicken, turkey, fish) Beans (refried, black, pinto, kidney) Nuts (almonds, pecans, walnuts, peanuts—NO SALT/HONEY ROASTED!) Cheese o Carbs: Pasta (spaghetti, lasagna) Rice Whole grain bread/tortillas Finish your homework. Go to bed by 10 pm. Seriously. Game day: Eat a good breakfast. Try to avoid added sugars (sugary cereal, syrup, etc.) Eat a good lunch. No pizza or MT Knights. Gatorade’s okay, but water is best. Right before the game: Have some water, and a granola bar, or a piece of cheese. NO CHOCOLATE (or other type of candy)!!! After the game: Drink a Gatorade (doesn’t have to be a big one; 20 oz. is fine) and eat some protein (cheese, lean meat, beans). NOTICE that we didn’t include Hot Cheetos or chips or other types of junk food. There’s a reason for that. If you want to perform at your highest level, your body needs the best fuel it can get. And Hot Cheetos are NOT good fuel. Sorry. Neither is soda. TOTALLY full of sugar. Fruit and water are your best choices. Nutrition information: For general use Avoid added sugars as much as possible. If you need sugar to survive, go for some fruit. Granola bars (NutriGrain, etc.) are ok, since they’re complex sugars, so they’re stored in your body to use later on when you need energy. I’m also going to give you a break on sports drinks, as long as you don’t drink them as much as you SHOULD be drinking water. Sports drinks are great after practices and games. Don’t overdo it. So: back to why sugar is bad for you. If you consume simple sugars for a quick burst of energy, that’s exactly what you’ll get. It comes quickly, and it also goes away quickly. It’s called a Sugar Rush. You get really energetic, and then you feel totally useless. Useless people don’t play volleyball very well. Go for natural sugars (fruit, etc.) and a steady intake of carbohydrates (see previous page) to keep your energy level up all day. Guess what else keeps your energy level up all day? SLEEPING! Absolute minimum? 7 hours every night. You should technically be getting between 8.5 and 9 hours every night, but we all know that’s not possible. Prioritize and manage your time, so that you’re doing homework before 8 pm. Sleep is good. Promise. If you need help prioritizing, speak with your advisor, or ask your coach. Teachers are good at it. We do it all the time. Other Information that will keep you playing all season long ROAD TRIPS: o Take the information on the previous page (pre-game and post-game foods) and apply it to road trips. Bring the food/drinks with you. For long trips (i.e. Mesa, and the Spike-It tournament), I’ll bring a cooler, so you can keep stuff cold. o PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE bring homework to do in the van! If your grades aren’t good, you don’t play. Sad, scary truth. You are students first, athletes second. Hence the term Student-Athlete. Priorities must be in order. REWARDS 1. WE WIN GAMES! 2. WE WIN THE DIVISION! 3. WE HOST A FIRST-ROUND PLAYOFF GAME! 4. WE GO TO STATE! 5. WE WIN STATE! OTHER REWARDS: Team end-of-season party Team/individual awards Personal satisfaction that you were an important part of an amazing season! 6. Consequences for failing to adhere to player expectations The Lady Knights of Metro Tech will be expected to adhere to norms in the following categories: a. Practice Times: student-athletes who do not communicate an absence will receive disciplinary action as follows: Unexcused Do not start/play next game # Offenses 1 Excused Reduced playing time Do not play next game/travel 2 Do not start/play next game Sit out next 2 games 3 Do not play next game/travel Excused from team 4 Sit out next 2 games * If you miss practice, you are missing valuable time to work with your team and improve your skills. If you miss practices repeatedly, that shows me and the rest of the team that our goals for the season aren’t important to you. You need to be at practice. Student-athletes who do not communicate TARDIES prior to practice time will be assigned to run one lap per minute tardy to be completed at the end of practice. If you miss time, you owe time. It’s that simple. b.
