STUDENT ATHLETE AFFAIRS (SAA) SPRING SEMESTER INITIATIVES

Panther Career Counseling & Job Search Coaching – Wednesdays – 4:30-7:30p – Pavilion Rm 144E
Tom Bachhuber will provide Student-Athletes instruction and planning assistance in their professional and
career development. The Wednesday schedule represents time set aside to work exclusively with StudentAthletes in their setting, but those who are not available at that time will have the opportunity to schedule
appointments with him during the week. The counseling will take place the entire Spring semester.

Panther Career Networking Forum-Monday, February 13th – 7:00pm – Wisconsin Room
Professional and career development event which will consist of a training portion (moderated panel
discussion), as well as a traditional career fair. Student-Athletes will have the opportunity to engage in
dialog with employers from medical, IT/engineering, industrial, sales, human resources, retail/fleet
management, corporate accounting, and government/armed services fields. Attendance is required.

Eating Disorders 101 – Tuesday, February 28th-6:00pm – Sandburg Flicks
Educational session to provide information on eating disorders, their effects and prevalence on college
campuses. Event sponsored in partnership with University Housing, Athletics, Women’s Resource Center,
and Norris Health Center.

Polar Plunge with Special Olympics – Saturday, March 3rd – McKinley Marina
The fundraising portion of the initiative is ongoing, with SAAC Representatives encouraged to create
fundraising webpages on the Special Olympics website, as well as sell $1.00 Polar Bears at home Women’s
Basketball games. Student-Athletes must raise a minimum of $75.00/each to participate in the plunge.
Proceeds go directly to Special Olympics to fund their programming initiatives.

Ronald McDonald House Dinner – Monday, March 5th-5:00pm – Ronald McDonald House
SAAC Representatives will prepare and serve food to the Families staying at the Ronald McDonald House.
The initiative will span the course of several days, as SAAC Representatives will be involved in the planning,
preparation, and execution. Food and/or monetary donations would be greatly appreciated.

Mike Green -Alcohol Education Speaker – Monday, March 12th – 7:00pm – Sandburg Flicks
Mike Green is a former student-athlete and recovering alcoholic who will speak to the group about the
dangers of binge drinking and its effect behaviorally. The date of March 12 th was specifically chosen, as it
is the Monday before Spring Break. Attendance is required.

National Student-Athlete Day Luncheon – Friday, April 6th – Athletics Classroom
Certificates will be presented to Student-Athletes who have achieved excellence in academic (minimum
3.0 GPA) and athletics, while having made significant contributions to their schools and communities.
Preliminary plan is to have a luncheon in the Athletic Classroom for involving the celebrated StudentAthletes and the Athletic Board.

Student-Athlete Awards Banquet – Sunday, April 29th – Wisconsin Room
Event programming will be similar to the ESPN ESPYS program. Athletic and academic accomplishments
will be honored. Planning is ongoing.

Study Day Snack-a-Thon – Friday, May 11th – 8:00am-11:00pm-Academic Area Lobby
SAAC sponsored initiative to provide food and beverage to the Student-Athletes in preparation for their
upcoming exams. The event was well received for the Fall semester, and we thank those who donated
food and beverage items. Donations will again be accepted.

SAAC Meetings – Spring Semester-8:00pm - Athletics Classroom
Our Spring semester calendar has been set. SAAC meetings will be held on the following days:
o Wednesday, February 15th
o Wednesday, March 14th
o Wednesday, April 18th
o Wednesday, May 9th
