Inventory, Monitoring, Research Catalog 2/28/13 1. Topic Baseline Inventory of Native and Non-Native Plant Species 2. Background Several qualitative surveys have been conducted at HP and the MKSR, with limited scope and area coverage, but no quantitative studies of plant communities have been conducted at HP, the Summit Access Road, and the MKSR. Information is lacking on the abundance, distribution, and diversity of invasive species and protected and rare plant species. 3. Purpose An initial baseline plant survey will help to clarify and prioritize future monitoring and management efforts by identifying problem areas and areas of special interest (i.e. areas with high native plant diversity). 4. Research Objectives Establish maps of extent, diversity, and composition of plant communities in UH managed areas, identify localities of rare and protected plant species (see Protected Species research topic), and determine the locations and severity of invasive plant infestations on UH managed lands (see Invasive Species research topics). 5. Management Applications Potential uses of Baseline Inventory of Native and Non- native Plant Species research could: help to clarify and prioritize future monitoring and management efforts, identify threats to the vegetation in UH management areas, and inform OMKM of the species under their purview. 6. Comprehensive Management Plan (and Sub-Plans) Applicability a. Priority –to be completed b. NRMP Source – Section 4.1-41, 4.1-42 7. Desired Outcomes Technical report summarizing project purpose, methods, results, etc. Identify management recommendations to address any existing or potential resource impacts. Provide a baseline data set suitably documented and formatted for use by other researchers and management authority. Prepared by: J.Yoshioka
