Guide to Candidate Welcomes

Candidate Welcomes
The Candidate Welcome helps to relax people and ensures we get the best
out of them in their interview! It also gives us a chance to show off LUU! The
candidate Welcome should be immediately before the interview and last
approx. 10-15 minutes for monthly paid staff. As the majority of weekly paid
staff are our members, it is not necessary to hold Welcomes for weekly paid
vacancies. However, if you have weekly paid candidates who are not
University of Leeds students, they should be offered the option of a Welcome.
FOR RECRUITING MANAGERS
1. Choose a Welcome guide who will come into contact with the
vacancy. Make sure they are briefed on the vacancy’s main duties.
This is so they can answer basic questions.
2. Specify three key departments for the Welcome guide to visit
3. Ask the person conducting Welcomes for their feedback during the
day.
4. Agree a place for the Welcome Guide to leave the candidate.
Should I do a tour on the employees first day?
On the successful candidate’s first day it is important to remember their initial
Welcome was only a ‘rough guide’ of LUU. The new employees need to have
a full tour which will show them the important areas they will need to know
about e.g. the HR office, staff room, etc.
FOR WELCOME GUIDES
What should Candidate Welcomes include?
1. Remember the main purpose of the Welcome is to put the candidate
at ease and literally welcome them to LUU
2. Visit key ‘front of house’ places e.g. if it is a commercial role, visit our
main shops and bars.
3. Visit 3 departments that the candidate will have the most contact with
(ask the Recruiting Manager which ones to choose)
4. The candidates should then be left at the agreed waiting area
5. There is a full Welcome guide available from HR if you wish to read it
6. If you would like Welcome Guide training, call Anna Nixon (Helpdesk).
7. Your Feedback! You will be asked for your first impressions on the
candidates by the Recruiting Manager. Questions to consider are:
 Were they on time?
 Did they show any LUU’s behaviours? e.g. were they positive about
the role? Were they friendly?
 Had they appeared to have done any research on LUU?
 What types of questions did they ask you?
