Obituary: Evelyn Hobart White
Dateline: Alburgh, VT
Evelyn Hobart White, a resident of Alburgh, VT since 1948,
passed away on Sunday, March 8, 2015 at the St. Albans
Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. She was 91 years old.
Evelyn was born at home on the family farm in Newbury
Center, Vermont on June 24, 1923. She was the youngest of
four children born to the late Walter and Bertha Hobart.
Evelyn received her early schooling in Newbury Center, where
walking the roughly five miles to and from school every day
was routine. As a young girl, she loved nature and the
outdoors and definitely pulled her weight on the family farm.
Known to be a bit of a tomboy, one of her proudest moments
was walking the ridge pole of the family barn. She attended
Woodsville High School for two years and graduated from
Newbury High School in 1941. She graduated from Concord
(NH) Business School in 1942 after which she returned home
to work in Woodsville, NH.
On January 20, 1945 she married Robert E. White in Ryegate,
VT with whom she shared 64 happy years. Evelyn is survived
by her four daughters and husbands: Linda & Donald
Strandberg of Georgia, Vermont, Rachael and David McFadden of Alburgh, Susan and Jeffrey Haubrich of
Cape Coral, Florida and Wendy and Larry Tatro of Alburgh. She also leaves six grandchildren: Jennifer
(Kevin) Stockwell, Scott Strandberg, Rebekah (Tim) Curtis, Heather Haubrich, Erika Haubrich, Kristin Tatro
and nine great grandchildren: Samantha, Tanysha, Peyton, Justin, Jordan, Matthew, Mary, Andrew and Cooper.
She also is survived by many special nieces and nephews and sisters-in-law, Ruth Whitcomb and Alida
Buckland. Evelyn was predeceased by her beloved husband, Bob, in 2009, and by her two sisters, Laura Clark
and Doris Veayo and by her brother, Frederick Hobart.
Evelyn was a devoted and loving homemaker and definitely no stranger to hard work. As a wife, mother,
grandmother and friend, the strength of her caring could not be matched. She was fiercely independent,
proud, hardworking and always there with a helping hand, no matter what the need. She and Bob were well
known for their large vegetable garden and spent many long hours each year processing the fruits of their labor
in preparation for the winter ahead. Many will remember Evelyn as an excellent seamstress. She was self
taught and, in the early years, worked long hours in the evening after the kids were in bed making clothes for
her children and husband. Later on, she became well known for taking in outside sewing and made many new
friends in the process. In addition, she was a 4-H leader and introduced many young girls to the joys of sewing.
Evelyn's home was always welcoming and the aroma of her homemade rolls, bread, pies, donuts and much,
much more always filled the house with warmth and love. She was tireless in her support of her children and
grandchildren and their many endeavors and her sense of humor was unmatched. We will miss her.
Evelyn's family would like to offer their sincerest thanks and appreciation to the compassionate and dedicated
staff at the St. Albans Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. It gave us great peace and comfort to know she
was well cared for in a safe and loving environment. We will always be grateful for this.
Evelyn will be forever loved, appreciated and missed by her family and friends. Her spirit will continue to guide
and comfort us. We will remember her with a smile, a longing in our hearts and with gratitude for the gifts she
left us.
Family and friends are invited to a celebration of her life to be held on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at 11 a.m.
from The Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton, VT. Pastor John C. Kehoe of the Union Bible
Church will officiate. Immediately following the service a reception will be held for family and friends at the
home of, Rachael McFadden 206 Martell Road Alburgh. Interment will take place in the Spring at the White
family lot in Bush Cemetery
Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the hour of the service.
