Recreation & Youth Development Specialist Emphasis in Performing Arts Job Description Position Title: Recreation &Youth Development Specialist Department: Recreation & Youth Development Immediate Supervisor: Sr. Manager, Recreation & Youth Development Alternate Supervisor: N/A Status: Regular Temporary FLSA: Exempt Non-Exempt Time: Full Part Work Days: Monday – Friday and some weekends and overnights during the school year and summer. Work Hours: 1 p.m. – 9 p.m. during the school year; flexible during summer programs (often 8am – 6pm); additional hours may be required to meet organization and programs’ needs. Must be flexible; will be assigned to day camps and might be assigned to overnight camps out of town/state. General Position Description Under the guidance of the Sr. Manager, Recreation and Youth development, assist with planning and leading existing activities within established programs, as follows: Create, plan and lead program events and activities in the performing arts including, but not limited to music, theater/drama, skits, set design, clowning, puppetry, dance, field trips, related games, etc. Have expertise in performing arts plus 3 or more other recreation components Be prepared to provide safe and quality instruction in all of the aforementioned activity areas while leading groups of elementary, middle school and high school age children in those activities on a regular basis. CDC Teacher (Updated 2-28-03) Page - 1 Provide safe, fun experience for Cabbage Patch clients with an emphasis on learning skills and applying those skills to life experiences. Integrating issues of faith and spiritual growth is essential. Maintain the upkeep of activity equipment and supplies. Must be a self-starter, fun-loving, and willing to go the extra mile to make program activities safe and exciting. Must have significant experience working with group activities focused on elementary and junior high ages. Must have the ability to lead groups of youth in music. Need to be an enthusiastic leader, sensitive listener, positive role model. Other shared responsibilities include general program coordination, staff support and enforcing client behavior code. Work with children and their parents, student assistants, volunteers, interns and other Recreation staff. Assume leadership role for the Performing Arts programming but must demonstrate skill in three other core recreation components In the absence of the Sr. Manager, Recreation/Youth Development, may supervise Recreation staff and volunteers in the summer. Help in the implementation of behavioral standards for clients. This person will perform duties in a variety of work environments to include but not limited to: general office environment, noisy, chaotic, emotionally and physically taxing indoor and outdoor environments. Since this department serves the largest amount of clients at The Cabbage Patch Settlement House, Inc., a high degree of liability exists with regard to client interaction (i.e. maintaining the physical safety of each client, utilizing approved behavioral modification and discipline techniques, safe transportation during outings, etc.). Essential Job Functions 1. Plan, organize, direct lead and evaluate numerous activities in the following program categories: including but not limited to music, theater, skits, puppetry; clowing, dance, drama, creative-writing, game room & gym supervision, field trips, hobbies & clubs, outdoor recreation, athletics, special events, structured play & games, summer programs and others as assigned. 2. Enforce behavior codes and do behavior crisis interventions. Complete necessary paper work and reports and make referrals when needed. Record suspensions and fill out behavior cards. 3. Cross-train to perform game room and monitor gym functions. 4. Recruit, train, monitor and evaluate volunteers. 5. Conduct client assessments, enforce behavioral codes and make referrals to appropriate departments or agencies as needed. 6. Maintain neat, tidy, clean, secure and safe program environments at all times. Conduct regular playground inspections. Perform light housekeeping and maintenance. 7. Plan, organize, lead, participate and evaluate weekend camps and other weekend programs as assigned. 8. Establish, maintain and operate our stage, sound and lighting systems. 9. Act on approved goals and objective to ensure achievement of desired results. 10. Have regular contact with core members and their parents. 11. Create and implement individual action/leisure plan with each core member. Refer for home visits as needed. 12. Do a pre-test and post-test on leisure habits of core members. 13. Attend staff meetings, trainings and other Patch meetings as required. 14. Open and close the Recreation Department area as assigned. Check all exterior locks and set security alarms as assigned. Special Projects/Other Duties as Assigned 1. Develop skills to safely and effectively guide the Performing Arts programs. Programs and activities will be designed to enhance fun, explore and learn about different cultures, and encourage an appreciation of the Performing Arts. The Specialist will research Activity topics to enhance his/her own knowledge of the subjects. The specialist will be required to submit detailed lesson/program plans for school term and summer term. 2. Guide Cabbage Patch facility tours as needed. 3. Public speaking on behalf of the Cabbage Patch. 4. Solicit tickets and goods if assigned. 5. Assist Maintenance staff in keeping grounds and sidewalks clean and clear, especially in inclement weather. Will perform some housekeeping duties. 6. Maintain flexibility and willingly perform other duties as assigned. 7. Conduct appropriate field trips 8. Drive a 15 passenger van when needed Equipment Used 1. Ability to support the goals, philosophy and beliefs of The Cabbage Patch Settlement House, Inc. 2. Bachelor’s degree or higher 3. 2 years full-time activities experience in a similar setting or organization. Must have successful work history with children and youth. 4. Able to lift up to 75 pounds. Must be physically capable to camp and facilitate program activities in all sorts of weather (especially extreme heat and cold situations), under primitive and often wilderness conditions, in indoor and outdoor environments. 5. Ability to maintain composure and objectivity in emotionally and physically taxing, chaotic environment. 6. Must be proficient at planning and leading activities in several major program areas as assigned. 7. Demonstrated ability to work with people of varied backgrounds and personalities. Must be willing to work independently as well as part of a team 8. American Red Cross CPR and First Aid certification. 9. Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. Able to drive 15-passenger van and tow trailer. 10. Must have an acceptable criminal records check. 11. Willing to train in recreation activities to strengthen our team.
