Oatlands Girl Scout Programs
Join us for fun and educational activities in a beautiful setting! All programs fit within a 1-2 hour time-frame and are specially
tailored to fulfill badge requirements. Contact education@oatlands.org for more information.
Daisies
Mari petal: “Responsible for what I say and do”
Tour Oatlands mansion while learning about museum manners and how to be a responsible house guest or
hostess. *May be paired with a Tea program, where girls can practice their etiquette while enjoying treats.
Tula petal: “Courageous and strong”
Tour Oatlands house and grounds and learn about some of the amazing women who have lived, worked, or visited here. Girls will
hear stories about women like Edith Eustis and Eleanor Roosevelt and share their own ideas about courage and strength.
Brownies
Making friends
Tour Oatlands house while learning about museum manners and everyday etiquette. Learn about
being a hostess, making polite introductions, and being considerate of others. *May be paired
with a Tea Manners program.
Naturalist: Bugs
On this trip, Brownie naturalists will explore Oatlands’ garden and grounds on a quest for amazing
bugs. Meet bugs up close, look for insect homes, learn cool facts, and make a bug craft. Bring a
journal for notes and sketches!
Juniors
Social Butterfly
Tour Oatlands and learn about the etiquette practiced here in the past as well as modern manners. Discuss social
dos and don’ts, and learn how to be a gracious hostess or guest. *May be paired with a Tea, where girls can
practice their social skills.
Playing the Past
Take a tour and learn about the girls and women who lived at Oatlands during two hundred years of American
history. Girls may try their hand at some old-fashioned games (or chores) and crafts. *An old-fashioned Tea may
be added (costumes welcome!)
Naturalist: Flowers
Take a brief tour of Oatlands’ grounds, then get your botanist’s journal out and venture into the garden. Get up close and personal
with flowers and make notes and sketches. In the herb garden, we will discuss the beneficial uses of plants and make an herb bouquet.
Cadettes
Naturalist: Trees
Explore Oatlands grounds and meet some amazing trees, like the giant Blue Atlas Cedar and the super-strong
Hornbeam. Learn about tree identification, anatomy, and the uses of trees, and add notes or sketches to your
naturalist’s journal. Perhaps you’ll be inspired to create a service project like planting trees for future visitors to
enjoy!

Making My Family Special - Achievement 1G
Tour Oatlands house and grounds to learn about how families lived during the 1800s and 1900s in
Loudoun. Try some historical games and see a living room with no T.V.!
Let’s Go Outdoors - Achievement 5G
Take a hike through the historic garden and grounds with a guide. Find amazing trees, flowers,
bugs, and more. Picnic lunches and compasses welcome!
Wolf Cubs
Your Flag - Achievement 2A,B,C,G
Enjoy a historical tour with a focus on military service and a lesson about the U.S. flag. Participate in a
ceremony where you practice the pledge of allegiance, folding, carrying, displaying and properly caring
for our flag.
Know Your Home and Community – Achievement 4F
Tour Oatlands mansion and learn how local sites and museums are important for preserving the history
and culture of our area.
Bear Cubs
What Makes America Special? Achievement 3A,B,C,D
While touring Oatlands, learn about the history of our area and some of the great Americans who lived and worked here. Boys will
take time to write about why America is special to them.
The Past is Exciting and Important - Achievement 8E
Come learn about fascinating local history, and what we can do to preserve it. Try old-fashioned games and chores, and learn how life
at Oatlands has changed over 200 years of history.
Webelos
Forester Activity Badge
Take a tour of Oatlands’ oldest and most unique trees, like the giant Blue Atlas Cedar and the super-strong
Hornbeam, and learn all about tree identification, life cycles, forest management and more.
Naturalist Activity Badge
Take a hike on Oatlands’ nature trail with a guide. Find amazing plants and animals, and learn which species
are friendly and which should be avoided! Learn about unique natural habitats and what you can do to preserve
them.
Boy Scouts
Contact us to plan nature hikes, historic tours, or troop picnics. We are also happy to provide opportunities for
group service projects or Eagle award projects.
