Rules:
a. You may work with one partner OR on your own. It is your choice! If you’d like to work
with a partner, you may pick your partner, but you will BOTH get the same grade,
regardless of how much work/effort each person puts forth.
b. You must use the technology appropriately. This includes putting the laptops back
correctly and shutting down/logging off properly as asked.
c. You must use class time wisely and work efficiently as asked.
Set One:
1. Because there are so many people who live in this city, pollution is a major problem.
When the Summer Olympics were held here in 2008, athletes had to train to withstand
breathing in so much of the city’s pollution. The people of this area also built a famous
wall many years ago, which “blends in” with the jagged mountainous landscape.

2. This city is in the northeast corner of its country. It is about 500 miles from North Korea.
The city lies at ______________ degrees north latitude, ___________ degrees east
longitude.
Theme:____________________________________
3. This city is mainly a flat land, however, the country that it belongs to is home to part of
the Himalayas, as well as many other mountain ranges.
Theme:____________________________________
4. The temporary residents are business people, teachers and students. The permanent
residents are from many different ethnic groups. The Han's, however, make up over 96%
of the population. Mandarin Chinese is the language spoken here.
Theme:____________________________________
5. This city has four definite seasons. Summer and winter are the two longest seasons with
fall and spring being the shortest. The climate varies according to the season with
autumn being the most pleasant time to visit.

* City, Country__________________________________________________________________
Set Two:
1. The city enjoys a temperate/mild climate that rarely sees extremely high or low
temperatures. The average yearly high temperature is about 75 °F, and yearly lows tend to
remain around an average of 34 °F. The city is actually two islands surrounded by a river.
Theme:________________________________________
2. This is the second most populated area in the western world after Manhattan in New
York. Because of the high population, there is a lot of air pollution from vehicles and
water pollution from urban waste.
Theme:________________________________________
3. This city is slightly north of the center of its country. It sits on the banks of the River
Seine. The city lies at about _________ degrees north latitude, __________ degrees east
longitude.
Theme:________________________________________
4. The city lies in a low area on a river, however, this country is home to part of the Alps,
one of the best mountain ranges in the world if you’re a skier! A separate mountain range
in this country, called the Pyrenees, is actually made up of non active volcanoes!
Theme:_______________________________________
5. The city is one of the most multi-cultural in Europe. It’s currently home to over 12
million people (just in one city!). If you want to buy something here, you’ll need to
convert your Dollars over to Euros (although, they used to use Francs)

*City, Country__________________________________________________________________
Set Three:
1. This state is bordered by some of the Great Lakes, as well as another country to the north.
The city lies at about _________ degrees north latitude, _________ degrees west longitude
and is the largest city (by population) in its country.
Theme:________________________________________
2. The Hudson River runs through this area, but the overall scope of the land in the state is
not unlike our own in Pennsylvania (areas of flat as well as areas of lower hills and
mountains). You might also get a good view of a neighboring state from parts of the city.
Theme:________________________________________
3. The state experiences relatively hot, humid summers and cold winters, similar to our own.
You would not notice much of a difference in climate if you moved to the area, from PA.
Theme:________________________________________
4. The main environmental concerns are air pollution causing acid rain affecting lakes and
damaging forests. There’s also a large amount of pollution from vehicles, which is
impacting the cleanliness of the oceans, as well as the air quality.
Theme:_________________________________________
5. The state, and this city especially, has increasing immigration from all parts of the world.
People here speak many languages (though the official language is English), and have
many different backgrounds due to the history of this city being the “welcoming point”
for immigrants to this country for the past several hundred years.

Set Four:
1. This country experiences a humid subtropical climate, with warm/mild summers and
winters. The warmest months occur in January and February, where the temperature tops
out around the 80s. Because the country is bordered by ocean, the ocean helps keep the
temperatures cool.
Theme:________________________________________
2. The city is split between two geographical areas, the Cumberland Plain to the south west
(which is a flat area) and the Hornsby Plateau to the south east (which is also mostly flat
but, but is made of sandstone and includes some very steep valley areas too).
Theme:________________________________________
3. The entire country is bordered by the Pacific Ocean. The city lies at about _________
degrees south latitude, _________ degrees east longitude and is located on the south-east
coast of the country in the state of New South Wales.
Theme:________________________________________
4. The city (and country) were settled by the English in the 1700s, many were looking for a
new place to settle, to find a better life. But the country remains home to the “aboriginal”
people as well, who settled there over 30,000 years ago! Many people visit this city as
tourists and visit the famous opera house (seen below), and the beaches, on their trip!
Theme:_________________________________________
5. The main environmental concerns include pollution from the size of the city (which is the
largest in the country). But the city is sure to maintain many natural outdoor areas and
parks, in order to keep from becoming overdeveloped and crowded with too many people.
Off the coast, there is much concern about preserving the Great Barrier Reef, one of the
world’s greatest natural wonders!

Set Five:
1. This city lies at about _________ degrees south latitude, _________ degrees west
longitude and is in the south east of its country, bordering the Atlantic Ocean.
Theme:________________________________________
2. Part of the city lies on the shores of the Guanabara Bay, but other parts of the city also
include flat plains, rocky mountains, and beaches as well. Building roads and tunnels in
and out of the city proved to be challenging, due to the diverse terrain.
Theme:________________________________________
3. The province experiences a tropical monsoon climate, which includes months of heavy
downpours or rain (mostly from December to March). Weather can change quickly
though, due to wind that blows and eventually reaches the city, coming from Antarctica.
Theme:________________________________________
4. The main environmental concerns are air pollution due to overpopulation. Much of the
city transportation includes Hybrid Busses, in order to reduce the amount of pollution
being released into the atmosphere.
Theme:_________________________________________
5. The city and country were founded by the Portuguese, who journeyed across the Atlantic
and settled there in as early as the 1500s. In fact, the country is the only on its continent
to speak Portuguese as its official language (most people speak Spanish in neighboring
countries). Many tourists visit this city to see the “Chris the Redeemer” statue (below),
and participate in “Carnival”, a HUGE celebration including dancing, singing and food!
Many more will flood the city in 2016, when it will play host to the summer Olympics.
