There are no perquisites/co-requisites for this course. B. Studies assistive technology research, theory, or practice under direction of faculty member. LEARNER OUTCOMES This course is designed to enable students to: 1. Design and implement an individualized project in an area of assistive technology research, theory, or practice under the guidance of the course instructor. NATURE OF COURSE DELIVERY Learning activities include the design and implementation of an individualized project in an area of assistive technology under the guidance of the course instructor. Students will complete the work independently, but are expected to check in at regular intervals with the instructor for feedback and guidance. In agreement with the instructor, students will submit products to the instructor to grade and will present their work in a culminating final presentation. PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS This course is part of the George Mason University, Graduate School of Education (GSE), Assistive Technology Program. The Assistive Technology Program has developed program specific standards in accordance with NCATE requirements. The Assistive Technology Program Standards incorporate several elements within the professional standards from the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), while also expanding upon then to meet the specific needs related assistive technology. REQUIRED TEXTS Instructor will develop a reading list based on the specific student project. COURSE ASSIGNMENTS 1. Assignment Descriptions Student Proposal (20 points) Upon registering for the course, the student will develop a 2-4 page proposal that outlines their proposed project. The proposal must include: Student Introduction: 1-2 paragraphs in which the student provides an overview of their knowledge and experience in their area of emphasis. Project Overview: 1-2 paragraph overview of their project idea and the reasons why they want to complete the project they are proposing. Goals: Includes at least 2-3 personal learning goals the student hopes to achieve through this course. Student Activities and Products: Description of the activities the student will engage in, as well as the products they plan to create and submit to the instructor for grading. Project Timeline: Proposed outline for completing project activities. Students are expected to submit the proposal to the instructor within the first week of the semester. By the second week of the semester, the instructor will review the proposal, adding in the timeframe for receiving instructor feedback and the grading criteria based on the proposed student activities and projects. By the end of the second week of the semester, the student and instructor will agree upon the terms of the student project. Upon approval, the instructor will sign the Graduate Independent Study Proposal form. Student Project (60 points) Students will develop and implement an individualized project based on their interests and experience. This project may include such activities as an action research project, a literature review, implementation project/client assessment, or development of a professional development workshop/training. As part of the independent study agreement, the instructor will outline the grading criteria for the student project and the timeline for submission. Student Presentation (20 points) Upon completion of their independent study project, students will present their final project to the instructor. The presentation should include an overview of the project, as well as each of the student’s products. Also, students should include a reflection on their 3 final project experience and discuss what they have learned and what they might do the same/differently if they were to complete the project again. 2. Grading Criteria and Scale Evaluation will be based upon a point system.
