Job Title: Learn to Race Coach Position Type: Contract Pay Range: To be determined Date posted: January 19, 2016 Posting Expires: February 5, 2016 Contract End Date: August 31, 2016 Contract Start Date: February 27, 2016 JOB DESCRIPTION The Learn to Race (LTR) coach will be responsible for the delivery and administration of the Escape Velocity LTR program. The LTR coach will also be an assistant coach in the DEVO youth development program. In their assistant coach capacity, the LTR coach will assist in leading DEVO practices, and will be coach at race events. The Learn to Race program is intended to introduce racing to new riders looking to learn the skills and confidence needed to race. The program is intended for first-time racers, community-license holders, triathletes needing pack riding skills training, and any racer who needs to brush up on the racing skills needed to compete. Escape Velocity requires all newly licensed riders to complete the LTR program before racing in categories 1-4. The LTR program is designed to be run in conjunction with the Spring Series road races (RR) and time trial (TT) events, as well as during the World Tuesday Night Championship crit events. Participants must complete the LTR race clinics which consist of 2 sessions held on 2 consecutive Sundays during the Spring Series RR events or on consecutive Tuesday nights during the crit series. The first session is a 2-hour skills clinic, where riders learn the basics of road racing. The second session will begin with a short review of the basics of racing, finishing with a practice race on the course in a controlled, no-drop environment. ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES Leading Learn to Race sessions at Spring Series races and during the summer Tuesday night crit series New rider road skills assessment. The LTR coach will be responsible for determining when/if a new rider is able to graduate from the LTR program to full road racing. Developing and executing training session plans, both for the LTR program and for DEVO practices Potentially leading LTR sessions for groups of new riders outside of Spring Series races (e.g. women’s new rider program) Introducing adults and youth that are new to road racing to the sport in a supportive and encouraging manner Assistant coaching at a DEVO practice Coaching for DEVO at race events Representing Escape Velocity and DEVO in the community QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS Extensive road racing experience At least one year of road cycling coaching experience NCCP level 1 coaching certification Understanding of adult learning principles; teaching certification an asset PREFERRED SKILLS/TRAITS Excellent communication skills Patient, supportive and welcoming personality Organized and self-motivated Able to teach and mentor across a wide range of ages and abilities 1 2
