Course Description: chemistry is the study of matter and its changes. Chemistry A topics will include: measurements, atoms, periodic law, chemical bonding and reactions and stoichiometry. Supplies needed for class: Each student will be required to keep all work in a three ring binder. The binder should have a minimum of three dividers labeled: Class notes, Homework, Tests and returned papers. The class notes section should contain all class notes with a cover page for each chapter. The Homework section should contain all homework with a cover page for each chapter showing the chapter number and name, and a list of the assigned problems. Each problem should be numbered and should include either a summary of the question or a complete statement of the problem. If a problem has a drawing in the question, that should be included. The Tests and returned papers section should contain all other papers including the course syllabus arranged in chronological order. This binder will also be used for Chemistry B. A calculator is required, but need not cost more than $12. A TI-30 (or similar) is sufficient. Grading Policy: Students will be graded on the work that is assigned and turned in to the teacher. The assignment values will vary, with most homework assignments worth 20 points, quizzes 40 points and projects and tests worth 100 points each. Quizzes: There will be scheduled quizzes and occasionally a pop quiz. Tests: There will be 2 to 4 tests during the trimester. Lab Reports: There will be several labs during the trimester and most will require a formal lab report which will be graded and returned and then stored in the student portfolio. Final: This course will have a comprehensive final exam which will count towards 10% of the trimester grade. Homework Policy: Homework is to be done as assigned. It must be turned in at the beginning of class or it will be counted as LATE. 1day late – maximum 80%, 2 days late – maximum 60%, after that it will be a zero (0). One homework grade (less than 20 point value) will be dropped for the trimester. For absences, you have as many days as you were absent to hand in work and still be on-time (For example, if you were absent for 2 days, you have 2 days after the due date to turn assignment in for full credit). Extra help: I will be available every day after school for help until 3:15 PM. I am in Room 303 – knock on the door.
