All these skills can be influenced through a good quality Work Experience placement and this is what 15 year old Michael Langley received when BIYP and partner Spirit Pub Company placed him at The Royal standard restaurant and pub. Michael suffers from autism and Asperger’s Syndrome, but thanks to his determination and The Royal Standard team’s support, nothing stood in the way of him being one of BIYP’s most successful placements yet. Here’s more on Michael’s career awakening inside the hospitality industry… “I have found the perfect job for me, from the first day I went to the bar I was made to feel part of the team and my buddy Jennifer looked after me every step of the way. “ The Royal Standard Manager, Mandy and buddy Jennifer ensured Michael didn’t miss out by adjusting his working hours to suit his medical needs. “Michael’s autism and Asperger’s Syndrome present challenges both for Michael and any potential employer. Jennifer and her team were welcoming and put Michael at ease, which helped to raise his confidence and resulted in a successful experience.” Michael said “I was introduced to everybody, shown around the building and shown videos about the company and careers in the business. Jennifer then set me a project, creating and implementing a food and drink promotion that would suit the bar and the customer profile, which I worked on for a week. I decided to create a pizza, made with a naan base and combined this with a drink promotion encouraging the upsell of wine. It was really interesting to do as it meant that I spoke to all the team to help come up with some ideas. Fair Train (Group Training Association) Limited Registered as a company limited by guarantee Company number 7313191, Registered Charity No: 1148867 I then created the pizza and designed all the promotional materials. At the end of the week I was able to serve the pizza to my mum, she was really proud of me.” Michael was encouraged to recognise a team member who inspired them during their placement, and he made his decision easily. “It was an easy decision for me, Jennifer really helped me so much. I feel that not only did I have a great Work Experience placement, I also made some great friends and it also helped me to identify a career that I would really like to have. It is a shame I have to go back to school in the meantime.” Fair Train (Group Training Association) Limited Registered as a company limited by guarantee Company number 7313191, Registered Charity No: 1148867
