2016 “Youth Voice in Governance: Experiencing Citizenship” 4-H Conference Sunday, March 20 (2 pm) to Wednesday, March 23 (2 pm) Downtown Salem Grand Hotel & Conference Center: 201 Liberty Sr. SE, Salem, OR 97301 12/1/2015 Facilitator Information Facilitator Roles During the Experiencing Citizenship conference, two facilitators will be assigned to each Roundtable Topic and work with a small group (10-16 teens) formed around an issue that is important to Oregon citizens and their government agencies. Roundtable Groups connect on Sunday and meet multiple times during the 4-day conference. The Round Table groups research an issue or question, work as a team, explore options, share ideas, find one or more solutions to that issue, develop a presentation (power point or Prezi), and deliver that presentation to an Oregon state agency on the final day of the Experiencing Citizenship conference. ROLE: Facilitators will help members of Round Table Groups to… Get acquainted. Build their team. Work together. Keep all group members engaged. Brainstorm. Listen. Support one another. Be analytic. Be creative. Consider options. Focus as needed. Take breaks as needed. Consider options. Expand ideas. Communicate individual opinions. Draw out individual ideas. Debate pros and cons. Resolve conflicts. Be flexible. Stay calm. Organize and develop a group presentation. QUALIFICATIONS: Facilitators need to… Be between the ages of 17 to 25. Be able to communicate effectively, listen, ask questions, observe, and provide instructions. Help groups make decisions. Be flexible. Be calm. Be able to apply leadership skills. Be able to coach, mentor and support others. Be able to help other facilitators; make suggestions; and solve problems together. Collaborate with adult partners during the conference. ACTION WHEN SELECTED: Each person selected to be a facilitator, must… Register for the Experiencing Citizenship conference, by Friday, Feb. 26. Submit a $20 deposit with conference registration by Friday, Feb. 26, to hold their position. Participate in at least two, teleconference orientation sessions in February (dates TBD.) Arrive at conference location by 10:00 a.m., Sunday, March 20, for on-site facilitator training.
