Prerequisites are required at most USHE institutions. If the committee wishes to approve the request, I suggest not removing the prerequisite of
ARTH 2710 or ARTH 2720, but changing it to recommended. If the committee chooses to remove the prerequisite, I suggest changing the first
sentence in the course description to: “For students interested in advanced study of Art History.”
University of Utah: All upper-division period-specific Art History courses have a recommended prerequisite of ARTH 2500 Introduction to the
History of Art & Visual Culture.
Utah State University: Most upper-division period-specific Art History courses have a required prerequisite of ARTH 2710 Survey of Western
Art: Prehistoric to Medieval or ARTH 2720 Survey of Western Art: Renaissance to Post-Modern, including Byzantine, Medieval, Nineteenth
Century, and Twentieth Century.
Utah Valley University: All upper-division period-specific Art History courses have a required prerequisite of ARTH 2710 History of Art to the
Renaissance, ARTH 2720 History of Art from the Renaissance, HUM 2010 Arts in the Humanistic Traditions I, or HUM 2020 Arts in the
Humanistic Traditions II.
Weber State University: All upper-division period-specific Art History courses have a required prerequisite of ARTH 1100 Art & Architecture of
the World AD 1000-Present (4 credits) or instructor permission.
Southern Utah University: ARTH 4740 Nineteenth-Century Art and ARTH 4750 Twentieth-Century Art have no required or recommended
prerequisites.
1/7/2011: Dept. chair wants prerequisites removed, does not want to use recommended, and gave permission to change course description as
described above.
