Marine Ecosystems
1. Plankton - tiny organisms that float near the surface
of the water. They are producers so they need
sunlight to produce their food.
Estuary – an area where fresh water from the rivers
mixes with salt water from the oceans.
2. Water temperature affects the types of organisms
that can live in a marine ecosystem.
3. Three abiotic (non living) factors that affect marine
ecosystems are water temperature, water depth,
and the amount of sunlight that passes into the
water.
4. The four major ocean zones are: (pages 60-61)
Intertidal Zone –ocean meets the land
Neritic Zone – water gets deeper, water is warm
Oceanic Zone – seafloor drops suddenly,
deepest part of the ocean
Benthic Zone – ocean floor, gets NO sunlight

Freshwater Ecosystems
1. Wetland – an area of land that is underwater or
whose soil contains a great amount of water
Marsh – treeless wetland
Swamp - wetland that contains trees and vines
Zones of the LAKE:
Littoral zone –shallow zone of the lake or pond
where light reaches the bottom and plants grow
Open water zone – zone of the lake or pond that is
ONLY as deep as the light reaches
Deep water zone - zone of the lake or pond where
NO light reaches
