Ballenberg event notice, 10 July 2014 Unique in Switzerland – silk production at Ballenberg The fascination of silk – from the worm to the fabric It’s that time of year again! Until 10 August you can still observe the fascinating process of traditional silk production at Ballenberg: from plucking the mulberry leaves to feeding the worms, from unravelling the cocoons to dyeing and weaving the silk fabric. Daily till 10 August in the Farmstead from Novazzano (TI) Silkworm breeding with a total of 3000 worms (the breeding takes place in two age groups) The silk exhibition with the film on silk The mulberry plantation with 34 trees and bushes Thematic guided tours and special silk programmes for schools on request Special activities until 27July Daily: 11 am and 1 pm Guided tour through the silkworm breeding and mulberry plantation. Duration max. 20 minutes. Only in German. No registration necessary. Tuesday 2 pm – 4 pm Unravelling of the silk thread from the cocoon (filament silk) Wednesday 10 am - 4.30 pm Silk thread is created on the spinning wheel. (staple fibre silk) Thursday 10 am - 4.30 pm Weaving a silk scarf (filament and staple fibre silk) Friday 10 am - 4.30 pm Weaving a silk scarf (filament and staple fibre silk) Sunday 2 pm – 4 pm Unravelling the silk thread from the cocoon (filament silk) The highlight of Friday 18 to Sunday 20 July All the silk handcrafts, including dyeing, can be seen live.
