Strawberry Hill
Horace Walpole’s Gothic Castle is one of England’s most elegant and eccentric houses. Created by Horace
Walpole in the 18th Century, Strawberry Hill is internationally
famous as Britain’s finest example of Georgian Gothic revival
architecture
Walpole called his castle a ‘plaything house’ and in choosing
the gothic style for Strawberry Hill he deliberately avoided the
fashionable classical idioms of his time: columns, pediments,
order and symmetry. In collaboration with a group of amateur
architect friends he based his designs on the architecture of the great gothic cathedrals and abbeys.
Walpole intended a tour of Strawberry Hill to be a theatrical experience. You enter a gloomy hall and pass
up a staircase of grey stony appearance before finally entering the sumptuous state apartment – a burst of
crimson and gold.
The cost for the day will be £59.50pp (could reduce dependent on numbers to £49.50) + £5 extra for
non-members. This includes: coach transport, entrance fees and private tour. Tea & coffee on arrival,
meals and refreshments will be at your own expense. Places will not be secured until your booking form
and cheque have been received. Cheques need to be presented at the BDFAS Meeting on 3rd
November at the very latest and from then, refunds will only be given in the event of cancellation at the
committee’s discretion. Please also note that whilst there is NADFAS Member-to-Member liability
insurance, BDFAS does not have insurance for loss or personal injury.
Members are requested to meet at Brecon Bus Station car park at 8.00 am for prompt 8.05 am departure.
Pick ups at Crickhowell bus stop (opposite Jehou) at 8.25 am and from Abergavenny Bus Station at
8.40 am. Please tear off the form below and return with cheque to Muiread O’Connell, Rhedyn, Cilmery,
