Board Meeting – 07/12/2011
Meeting was called to order at 7:00 am at Skeeters by Don Raskin.

Approval of Minutes:


Motion: To approve Minutes from June 14th Board meeting as Michael Silver prepared them.
Vote & Resolved: Don Raskin motioned and Posey Parker second the motion
Treasurer Report (Don Raskin):
Reviewed sheets, emailed PNL & Balance Sheet dated 06/30/2011. Discussed how Golf Club funds were
higher than expected. The Foundation balances are significantly higher than those of the club.
Membership Report (Kathy Kokas):





Kathy Kokas will be having a meeting at her home on Wednesday, July 13th at 7 p.m. The focus
will be on recruitment and retention and inviting individuals to attend meetings as guests.
Terry Ziegler proposed keeping members active, involved with other meetings and service
projects that count as make ups.
Nine members have missed excessively and the names were distributed amongst the group to
be called/emailed.
Frank Parrilla, a current member of the LaPorte Rotary Club, joins the West U Rotary club
Thursday, July 14th.
There are a total of 104 members, 70.47% attendance.
International (Carol Lester):





Water project in Kenyan hospital; Jerry Gibbs will continue to head this.
Greg Faldyn will continue with Honduras; make comments and will resubmit for a grant again.
Hopefully approved in the next couple of months; moving slow.
Books: Last loading 8 Rotarians, 5 pallets. Terry proposed Saturdays. Received an email from
Pakistan regarding first delivery there. There are plenty of books we just need solid contacts for
shipping spots to take care of getting them thru customs and pricing of getting them there.
Terry asked to search for local groups who might need books.
Micro lending “Caring Friends”: There are KIVA points to give away. Honey Leveen will help
with doing so this year.
Medical Bridges: On July 26th Bob Gebhard and John Collier will be part of a meeting to explore
this vision. Trustworthy partners at the other end are needed. Also another key part needed is
a medical equipment repair room.
Vocational (Carol Gradziel):




Clothing drive at club-August 4th; Texas Citizens Bank will be a drop off point for clothes up to
that date. Articles to be sold in thrift shop. Last year the shop totaled $300,000 in sales.
HISD Back to School at GRB August 6th. Volunteers needed to provide school supplies and
immunizations.
YMCA backpacks; Irene Duque will work on purchasing the supplies. Possible date for event,
Tuesday 08/09 at Ronnie’s home.
Brandy Perryman has agreed to assist with selecting nominees and presenting the annual
awards.
Community Service (Chuck Guffey):




Total of 6 volunteers, proposed a new member to co-chair.
8 major projects in place for the year.
Interact Rotaract is the challenge; budget shows $1500 for this area.
Kathy proposed getting into sheltering arms again. It is a great program but we need to find a
representative within that organization.
Public Image (David Le Fever):


Fourth of July event was publicized on instant news.
Establishing a Facebook page for the club is the new focus.
New Business:



Obsolete equipment; Wally will test the projector before throwing it away.
Guerrero: the money has already been given.
Rotary/Astros: Chuck Guffey will lead this project again this year.
