Faculty Recruitment
1. Department Committee is formed.
2. Department chair submits ad to dean for approval. Positions for tenured and tenure-track
faculty members should be advertised nationally. Beverley Golden can help with Chronicle ads.
InsideHigherEd.com is an inexpensive way to advertise to a general audience. Departments
will be held to advertised rank and tenure status. If not sure, leave open.
3. Department reviews applications.
4. Finalists (those you wish to be interviewed) are recommended to dean, who decides which
candidates to bring to campus (dean sends electronic vitae to provost for information only; in
the event you are searching for a chair or someone who would need to qualify for tenure,
provost will review the CV in that context rather than as an information only item).
5. Finalists are interviewed following HR guidelines. Please make time in interview schedule for
candidates interviewing for tenure-track or tenured positions to meet with Michael Odell to
discuss sponsored programs. Provost will not need to interview faculty for positions other than
chair, dean, or someone who would be seeking a tenured position. If the department would like
the provost to meet with candidates for other positions to help woo the candidates, she will do
so when schedules can be worked out.
6. Dean sends request to hire to Provost with requested salary and rank, faculty budget
worksheet, CV, and EOC.
7. Provost approves offer of employment (no offers may be made without this approval in
writing).
8. Preliminary verbal offer to candidate is made by dean or department chair (dean’s preference).
9. Preliminary notice of accepted offer is given to Provost.
10. Provost sends official offer letter to candidate. When signed offer is returned, the provost’s
office forwards the original to HR and a copy to the dean and department.
11. The following should be on file in College/Department: a) copies of signed offer letter,
application, transcripts, EEO form, etc., b) all applications received for the position, and c)
documentation of hiring decision process (e.g., questionnaires, matrices, etc.). Copies of
materials must be sent to HR. Send to the provost’s office the original transcript(s) and copy of
the faculty application.
12. The following should be on file in the provost’s office: original transcript(s), and copies of the
faculty application, CV, EOC, and signed offer letter.
