Classes are normally held on Wednesday evenings from 5pm to 7.30 pm. This may be altered. An additional hour of tutorial support will be added each evening, beginning later in the first term. Classes will be held in the Dyslexia Centre at 17a Upper Newtownards Road Belfast. Observed teaching sessions may take place at NIDC premises, where possible, at times to be arranged: otherwise they are presented on video. The fee for the one year course is presently £1750; payment as follows: a non-returnable deposit of £250 on offer of a place with two further equal instalments first instalment to be paid on enrolment final instalment to be paid at the beginning of the second term. This is a fully professional, competence-based qualification. Study extends over the academic year with a minimum of 70 hours of lectures, seminars and workshops. Central to the award is a teaching practice element. Centre experience of delivering this and related OCR qualifications extends over 15 years. Target Group Teachers and other professionals working within one phase of educational provision – primary, secondary or adult (post-16), who support learners experiencing significant difficulties with the acquisition and development of literacy and (basic) numeracy skills. The course will enable candidates to: Identify and assess the needs of Learners with Specific Learning Difficulties Plan, deliver, review and evaluate teaching programmes in both individual and small group settings Candidates should be qualified and practising teachers, or other professionals who hold recognised professional qualifications, with appropriate learning support experience. OCR Level 5 Diploma in Teaching Learners with SpLD (Dyslexia) Unit Overview Unit 1: Understanding Special Educational Needs policy and context in relation to dyslexia / specific learning difficulties Element 1: Demonstrate Knowledge and understanding of national and regional legislation & practice affecting SEN with reference to SpLD (Dyslexia) Element 2: Understand the role of specialist educators within a multiprofessional team Assessment Element 1.1- a report of 3000 words demonstrating knowledge of local and national policies & how these have impacted on own teaching Element 1.2 – 2 descriptions of 2000 words each of how 2 specialist reports might inform understanding of 2 learners’ needs Unit 2: Assessing the needs of individuals with dyslexia/specific learning difficulties This unit will equip the candidate to assess the needs of learners with dyslexia/SpLD affecting the development of literacy and/or numeracy skills. Candidates will interpret information gathered and draw conclusions on whether literacy and/or numeracy skills match expected standards. Note: 2 learners at different stages within one phase One learner with literacy difficulties One learner with literacy and numeracy difficulties The two learners MUST show significantly different needs from each other OCR Level 5 Certificate in Teaching Learners with SpLD (Dyslexia) Unit 3: Planning and teaching learning programmes for individuals with dyslexia / SpLD. This unit will equip candidates to plan lessons for learners with dyslexia / SpLD. Candidates will plan and manage sessions, and select and use appropriate teaching methods to deliver effective lessons / learning support sessions focusing on specified targets. They will establish a productive learning environment and communicate effectively with learners Note: A total of 20 hours of planned teaching / learning support One learner will receive a min of either 6 or 8 hours support over a min of 6/7 weeks One learner will receive a min of either 12 or 14 hours support over a min of 10/ 12 weeks Programme for one learner must include literacy and numeracy At least 50% of evidence overall must come from literacy support Evaluate after each 6/7 week block of teaching Unit 4: Evaluation of teaching and learning programmes for individuals with dyslexia A complete description of the course requirements, with details of learning outcomes and evidence requirements for each unit can be found on the OCR website.
