The Superintendent, GS-0401-7/9 is a permanent full time position; the remaining six positions are permanent positions subject to furlough. Advertisement of the positions is scheduled to begin January 14, 2013. The Southern Ute Wildland Fire Module will be located at Southern Ute Agency, in Ignacio, Colorado. Wildland Fire Modules (WFMs) facilitate the use of fire and other management techniques involving planned and unplanned wildland fire events. WFMs are highly skilled and versatile fire crews, which provide technical and ecological based expertise in the areas of: long term planning, ignitions, holding, and suppression, prescribed fire preparation and implementation support, hazard fuels reduction, and fire effects monitoring, resulting in fire fulfilling its natural/historic role to meet resource and management objectives. These positions will be under the direction of the Southern Ute Agency Fire Management Officer and will form the Southern Ute Wildland Fire Module as a national fire resource travelling throughout the country. The incumbents are responsible for the day to day operation or supervision of a seven person Wildland Fire Module. The primary mission of a Wildland Fire Module is to provide an innovative, safe, highly mobile, logistically independent, and versatile fire module with a primary commitment to maintain fire’s role as a natural ecological process for wildland fire management and incident operations. Ignacio, Colorado is located in beautiful southwestern Colorado, 22 miles Southeast of Durango. Centrally located within the four corners area, the area boasts low elevation deserts and high mountain terrain and has world-class, year-round recreational activities available. Mountain biking, skiing, hunting and fishing opportunities abound. Home values in Ignacio range from $100,000 to $200,000 with housing prices increasing in neighboring Durango and Bayfield. Rental costs range from $200- $250 per room per month in Ignacio to $300-$400 per room per month in Durango. Southern Ute Agency Fire Management Program is a dynamic and busy fire program with an average of 75 lightning caused fires per season and an active prescribed burn program which averages over 1,000 acres burned yearly. The Southern Ute Indian Tribe is one of the most progressive tribes in the country with a modern infrastructure which includes the Sun Ute Recreational Facility, new museum and the Sky Ute Resort and Casino.
