Terrace Farming Some people live on the side of a mountain. They need to grow crops. They cut out parts of the mountain to make flat areas to farm. People in China and people in Mesoamerica grow food on flat spaces cut into the side of mountains. Roads People need to travel from one city to another. They use roads to trade goods with other people. They use roads to talk with other people. They use roads to learn about other places. People in Rome and Mexico (Inca) were the first to build large road systems. Canals and Dams People make a canal by digging out the ground so that water can run from one waterway to another. Boats travel on the water to move people and trade goods. Canals connect the seas or oceans that usually have land between them. Two examples are the Suez Canal and the Panama Canal. People use a dam to stop water in a river from moving. Farmers need a dam to stop water from flowing if there is too much water. Too much water causes a flood. People in Egypt have a dam called the Aswan High Dam. Fossil Fuels An example of a fossil fuel is oil that we use in our cars. Examples are: oil, petroleum, and natural gas. We use fossil fuels to make many new things to make our lives better. People all over the world use fossil fuels.
