Adaptations (Changes) to Geography
Irrigation
Farmers need water for crops (plants they grow). They need a way to move the water
from rivers to the crops. Irrigation systems bring water from rivers or lakes to crops. In
Egypt and China, they used irrigation systems to grow more food. When they grow more
food, their people can grow.
Terrace Farming
Some people live on the side of a mountain. They need to grow crops. They cut out parts
of the mountain to make flat areas to farm. People in China and people in Mesoamerica
grow food on flat spaces cut into the side of mountains.
Roads
People need to travel from one city to another. They use roads to trade goods with other
people. They use roads to talk with other people. They use roads to learn about other
places. People in Rome and Mexico (Inca) were the first to build large road systems.
Canals and Dams
People make a canal by digging out the ground so that water can run from one waterway
to another. Boats travel on the water to move people and trade goods. Canals connect the
seas or oceans that usually have land between them. Two examples are the Suez Canal
and the Panama Canal.
People use a dam to stop water in a river from moving. Farmers need a dam to stop water
from flowing if there is too much water. Too much water causes a flood. People in Egypt
have a dam called the Aswan High Dam.
Fossil Fuels
An example of a fossil fuel is oil that we use in our cars. Examples are: oil, petroleum,
and natural gas. We use fossil fuels to make many new things to make our lives better.
People all over the world use fossil fuels.
