Conti® Thermo-Protect Insulation System Puts an End
to Energy Waste

Experts believe that failure to insulate industrial plants costs millions
Conti® Thermo-Protect even insulates complex line and piping systems
Reduces heat losses by up to 80 percent
Efficient and simple, easy to install
Wide range of applications for all types of industrial plants
Hanover/Northeim, June 2014. Systematically insulating industrial plants could yield enormous
savings in energy and costs and lower CO2 emissions. Experts have calculated that in Germany
alone, insufficiently insulated industrial plants waste 106 petajoules of energy each year. This is
roughly equivalent to the annual output of four medium-sized coal-fired power plants. The cost is
estimated at around €750 million a year. And yet, there is a very simple solution to this: Conti®
Thermo-Protect, developed by ContiTech. It is a system that insulates even complex line and
piping systems easily and efficiently to reduce heat loss.
Huge saving potential thanks to insulated system parts
Whether a company is medium-sized or large, investigations have shown that up to 10 percent of
all industrial systems are either uninsulated or have damaged insulation. And yet by insulating
system parts, these plants could cut energy consumption by 20 to 80 percent. This is where the
ContiTech insulation system comes into play. Conti® Thermo-Protect is the ideal insulation solution
for complex or flexible line and piping systems.
Already the winner of several awards, the ContiTech product steps into the breach when
conventional insulation materials fail. Conti® Thermo-Protect combats heat loss and cuts energy
costs considerably – whether in heating or hydraulic systems, thermal oil installations or
vulcanizing presses. The highly flexible, malleable silicone material self-vulcanizes at temperatures
as low as 80°C and is available as a paste, hose, or molded product.

-2ContiTech recently showcased this enhanced insulation system at the ISO in Cologne, the
International Trade Show for Industrial Insulation Materials and Technology. "Many companies
have learned that energy efficiency does not just mean saving electricity but also, and above all,
efficiently insulating all system parts. It was therefore no wonder that our product attracted such
huge interest. Many companies from Europe as well as from the U.S., Russia, and Asia have taken
a good look at our system," says Hans-Peter Paulsen, in charge of further development and
marketing of the innovative insulation system at ContiTech Elastomer Coatings in Northeim.
Now self-vulcanization at over 80°C
Conti® Thermo-Protect is easy to install (even if it is used to retrofit an industrial system); the
financial outlay is not excessive and quickly pays for itself. The plastic, ductile mass insulates
couplings and valves, even in places that proved to be impossible to insulate in the past. The
material can be used within an ambient temperature range of -50°C to +250°C. And using system
or machine heat, Conti® Thermo-Protect now self-vulcanizes at temperatures above 80°C. It is selfadhesive, water repellent and self-extinguishing, UV-resistant, and weatherproof. ContiTech
Elastomer Coatings is already at work on the next generation, which will target specific
temperature ranges.
Pastes, hoses, and molded products added to the product portfolio
The product portfolio was also extended: Alongside non-cured sheets suited for the individual and
flexible insulation of flanges, couplings, and complex lines as well as machines and other systems,
ContiTech has now added further application variants to its range.
The most recent additions are CTP hoses, already vulcanized hose insulations, which are
particularly flexible and robust. The product range includes pre-slit hoses in various thicknesses
and closed insulation on reinforced hoses.
CTP molded products are also new to the range. The pre-fabricated molded products are intended
for a quick insulation of valves and couplings. Various formats cover the most common standard
couplings sizes, special designs are possible on request.

-3Dispensing the new CTP paste is particularly easy. Available in cartridges, the unvulcanized
insulation material is ideal for closing up slits and clearances. The paste is also the perfect addition
when using CTP sheets.
Also new to the line-up are CTP accessories. They expand the range of CTP application
possibilities. Systems and adhesives for securely sealing molded products are also envisioned.
Sustainable savings
"In this age of climate neutralization and cost optimization, the global demand for insulation
materials in all industries will continue to rise. With our Conti® Thermo-Protect insulation system,
we not only offer an efficient approach to energy management and to improving your carbon
footprint. Over the long term, CTP also helps you curb energy consumption, reduce CO2
emissions, and cut costs," says Hans-Peter Paulsen from Business Development CTP at
ContiTech Elastomer Coatings in Northeim.
