NHCS BULLYING REPORTING EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 2012-2013 CAMPUSES REPORTS TO Student Services ELEMENTARY MIDDLE HIGH Totals 167 181 25 373 CONFIRMED 86 75 11 172 UNCONFIRMED 80 100 13 193 TOTAL NC WISE UNDETERMINED 1 6 1 8 N/Avl 178 Available after Powerschool Discipline portal is complete. The current procedure for documenting bullying begins at the campus level. All investigations are to be conducted and the reports are then sent to Student Support Services for review and to determine the status of Bullying on all campuses. After reports are received they are reviewed to determine the need for interventions that may include consultation, additional support services for students or training for campus level investigators. These records are also used if a Transfer Request due to Bullying is submitted, to provide documentation that is used in the determination of granting a petition for a transfer. The total student population for NHCS for the 2012-2013 school-year was 25,624. Reports received in Student Support Services reflect only 1.5% of students, for all grade levels, who utilized the established protocol for addressing incidents of Bullying. A recent national study, cited by the American Educational Research Association, indicated that approximately 28% of students age 12 to 18 reported being bullied at school during the school year (Robers, Zhang, Truman, & Snyder, 2012). NHCS is far below the national average. However, a strong commitment to creating safe, civil and productive environments remains the number one priority in NHCS. This commitment to safe, civil and productive environments is reflected in the implementation of research based effective strategies for reducing bullying through taking a diversified intervention approach in concert with bullying programs. All campuses are implementing Character Education through the Common Core Essential Standards of the Guidance Curriculum. Eight NHCS elementary campuses are PBIS Campuses with Partnership Agreements on file with NC DPI. One elementary campus utilizes the Connected Schools Program while others employ the use of Second Step, 7 Habits of Happy Kids in conjunction with other Social-Emotional Skills building strategies. NHCS Middle and High Schools continue the use of Why Try, School Connect and Mind Up. Williston and D.C. Virgo will implement Connected Schools programs for the 2013-2014 school-year along with PBIS. Currently four Middle Schools will become PBIS schools during this upcoming school year.
