Vaccinations for Dogs Do I need to vaccinate? Vaccination protects your pet against serious and fatal diseases. What am I vaccinating against? Canine Distemper: This virus attacks the gut, lungs and nervous system and is usually fatal. Leptospirosis: There are two types of diseases; the first is passed on in watercourses from the urine of infected rats and can also affect humans. Parvovirus: This can cause very serious often fatal diarrhoea Canine Parainfluenza: This virus is an important component of ‘kennel cough’, a highly infectious upper respiratory tract infection of dogs which cause a dry hacking cough. Canine Hepititis: This virus rapidly attacks the liver, lungs, kidneys and eyes. Many cases are fatal but some dogs can recover. When to vaccinate: 1st vaccines can be given from 8 weeks of age 2nd vaccines should then be given 2-4 weeks later (minimum of 11 weeks old) Do I need an annual vaccine? Some components provide immunity for 3 years but others only provide 12 months cover. We only vaccinate against the necessary diseases so your pet will not receive all vaccines every year. If you are insured and your vaccines are NOT up to date then your insurance company may not pay on making a claim. What to expect post vaccination: After having a vaccination your dog may feel a little off colour but should return to himself/herself in a few days. When can I let my dog out? At Berry House we recommend that you wait 1 week after the 2nd vaccine before taking your dog out for its first walk in order to ensure maximum protection.
