Minutes Reviewed from 3-13-15 meeting. Minutes were approved
Dr. Buggy discussed committee membership and the fact that although we have increased student
membership, each class will only have one vote when a vote does come up. Mostly this committee is a
forum for discussion of student affairs issues, events, etc.
Student Events
White coat ceremony was held on September 27th. Photos and video are now posted. Dr. Buggy showed
the committee where to access school of medicine photos and videos from our website.
Match Day will be March 18. Survey will be sent to Class of 2016.
Senior Banquet still gathering information to determine the details of this event
Graduation will be held in Columbia on May 6, 2016 at Noon. This was a decision by the USC board of
trustees and will be held with the School of Medicine in Columbia. Tentative plan to provide a bus to
take students to Columbia. Dr. Buggy and Maggie have met with staff from USC School of Medicine
Columbia and representatives from the board of trustees to make tentative plans
Dr. Darrell Kirch, President of AAMC will be the keynote speaker and has been nominated as an
honorary degree.
Duties during ceremony will be split evenly between Greenville and Columbia
students/faculty/administrators
Convocation will be an event just for Greenville students held here in Greenville on Thursday May 5.
Location has yet to be nailed down, but we tentatively have Gunter Theater at the Peace center and
McAlister Auditorium at Furman secured. The location will be determined based on student preference
for number of attendees since these two locations are very different sizes.
Dr. Gates has also suggested Taylors First Baptist Church. Capacity is 2400. There would be no
rental fee, just the cost of clean up, a police officer and A/V.
AOA Chapter
Medical Honor Society where typically 1/3 to ½ membership is inducted in 3rd year and then the
remainder in 4th year. Based on grades and several other factors that show students being well-rounded.
We cannot establish a chapter until we have full accreditation.
AOA faculty will have a reception/meeting next week to work on logistics and electing a council.
AOA will do a site visit and if all goes well we should have a chapter in place by Spring 2016. Hope to
induct 5-10 graduating students at that time.
1 Faculty and 1 Resident can be elected to the chapter each year as well.
The Colleges
Alyssa Adkins gave a brief report on what the colleges are and some of the events that have taken place.
Maggie discussed faculty involvement and what we might be able to do support them in the future.
Faculty communication on the clinical side has been minimal but Emily reported that we are currently
working on a plan to involve them more as affiliate faculty.
Gold Humanism Honor Society
Event was held this summer for induction of students and residents and Dr. Forstein and Dr. Amanda
Hartke are still working on getting a time to schedule meeting of the inductees.
There is a portion of our website devoted to GHHS.
Student Awards
Dr. Buggy showed the awards and nomination process that Faculty Affairs has put into place for Faculty
Awards. He will connect with Dr. Best to determine how to best get this information out to Faculty.
We ask students to brainstorm ideas for student and faculty awards to be given at Convocation or Senior
Banquet.
Dr. Forstein suggested departmental awards from the clinical departments. Check in with Clerkship
Directors.
