Name: Rebecca Gulla-Devaney
Supervising Teacher: Mrs. Thomas
Grade/School: Grade 4/Gardner Pilot Academy
Lesson Title: The World Heritage of Grade 4
Content Area: An extension of Hispanic Heritage Month to encompass not only Hispanic
heritage, but to celebrate the different heritages found in the 4th Grade class. The web site
will be a resource for students to learn more about the country which their ancestors came
from including culture, country facts, food recipes, and a summative quiz about what they
have learned.
Time of Activities: Approximately 40 minutes
Duration of Lesson/Unit: Throughout the duration of the 2009-2010 school year
I. Content Area: Social Studies and Geography
The purpose of this web site will be to expand upon the students’ knowledge of their own
cultural backgrounds and the backgrounds of students in their community. There will be a web
page for each country from which a member of the class descends from. This includes eight
different countries, mostly from South American and Asia.
II. Topic: Grade 4 Heritage
Topics that will be addressed concerning each country will include: the country’s location, flag,
capital, major cities, language spoken, and two people from that country who are well known
from history or present day.
III. Goals:
The students will broaden their knowledge of their own heritage by learning new facts about the
countries from which they descend. Similarly, students will also then be able to draw parallels
between the heritages of themselves and their classmates. This web site will be an extension of
Hispanic Heritage Month, as it will cover not only Hispanic heritage, but countries from all over
the world.
IV. Objectives: Students will be able to:
 Identify the six specific countries on a world map
 Match the country to its corresponding capital
 Define the meaning of relevant vocabulary words such as immigration, emigration,
heritage, and culture
 Classify countries by the language spoken within them
 Match the country to its corresponding flag
 Name well known people whose heritage is found in the specified countries
V. Technology, Materials, and Aids:
Students will be able to access the created web site from their computers at school. If there is not
enough computers in the computer lab for each student to use individually, then the students may
work in pairs or groups of three.
VI. Procedures/Methods:
a Overview: Based on the design of the web site, a page will be dedicated to each
country from which a student in the 4th Grade class descends. There, they will find
specific facts about that country, including well known individuals who have descended
from the same country who can serve as role models for the students. In their current
social studies class, they are studying the flags of the world and differences between
continents and countries. The material on the web site will visually support the content
that they are learning in class.
b. Introduction: The web site will be introduced as a place where students can go to
learn more about the countries from which they descend. As they explore the web site,
they will become familiar with the location of the countries on a map, the language
spoken there, the country’s traditional food, and two famous people who are from that
country. The lesson will begin by asking the students to log onto the web site. I will
remind the students that they have been learning about the world geography in social
studies. I will them explain that the web site they are about to learn contains facts about
six countries from where their classmates are from.
c. Activities:
I. Log on to Web Site
A. Ask students to pick a computer in the lab
1. If there are not enough computers for each student to work individually,
they may work in pairs or groups of three
2. Explain that during the lesson on the computers, they must stay on task
and not visit other web sites not appropriate to the lesson
B. Ask students to log onto the web site
1. During my introduction of the lesson, I will remind the student that they
have been learning the differences between countries and continents in
social studies. They have also began to learn the locations of major
countries in the world.
2. Remind students that their families are from many different countries
and it is important to know where those countries are on a map.
3. Explain that this web site will give them more information about certain
countries in the world and will show them where the countries are located
on a map.
C. Read the directions aloud to them and answer any questions they have about
the home page
1. Inform students that they have about 25 minutes to explore the web site,
read through the vocabulary, and answer the 5 quiz questions after they
have found all the countries
II. Web Site Design
A. Home Page
1. Contains a world map, title, description of site and its content
2. Contains links to the country’s respective pages, a vocabulary page, and
the summative quiz page

important facts from the eight countries.
3. At the end of the quiz, students will learn how many correct answers
they gave. They will then be able to learn the correct answers by visiting
the page of the web site where the correct answer can be found
E. Biography Page
1. The final linked page will be a short biography about the creator of the
web site including the current school I attend and the class I am taking
which allows me to work with the fourth grade students.
III. After Students have used the Web Site
A. Ask students what one fact they learned from the web site
1. Have two students define geography and heritage, ask how they are
related and give examples of what those two words mean
B. Answer any questions students have after using the web site
IV. Web Site Use
A. Students may use the web site throughout the year as a resource about the
countries from which their heritage is from.
1. As geography is something that the fourth grade teacher will be
covering throughout the year, the content on the web site can support her
future lessons
d. Follow Up:
Students could participate in a project in which they draw the flag of the country from
which their family descends to connect to the content of the web site. They could also
write a biography report on a person described on the web site or another well known
figure from one of the listed countries.
VII. Technology Standards:

regarding responsible use of computers and networks.

web sites not appropriate to the lesson at hand. Students will be reminded of this before
they begin to use the web site.
G3-5: 2.5 Work collaboratively online with other students under teacher supervision
