Park City Performing Arts Foundation Presents
St. Regis Big Stars, Bright Nights
Outdoor Concert Series
Rickie Lee Jones
With Opening Act: Lucy Wainwright Roche
August 25, 2012
PARK CITY, UT – “The premiere song-stylist and songwriter of her generation,” (according to The
New Yorker’s Hilton Als), Rickie Lee Jones adds her “transcendent” voice and phenomenal stage
presence to the St. Regis Big Stars, Bright Nights concert series on Saturday, Aug. 25. Just three
days before the launch of her newest album, the Grammy-winning Jones steps into the spotlight with
a hearty repertoire of poetic originals and stirring covers. Sweet-voiced Lucy Wainwright Roche
will open the concert with her signature folk-meets-pop grace. The concert takes place at Deer Valley
Resort’s Snow Park Outdoor Amphitheater. Show starts at 7 p.m. Gates open at 5:30 p.m.
As MOJO writes, “When beatnik kitty cat Rickie Lee first blew minds in’79 with Chuck E.’s In
Love, it was obvious that an artist of startling talent had arrived… as she evolved, she wisely shed
the theatrics and focused on her art.” Though she’s stepped brashly across genres, Jones’ core music
tends to fit somewhere into the folk-jazz-R&B vein. Her latest endeavor, “The Devil You Know” (an
album of rock legends’ covers produced by Ben Harper), is slated to launch Aug. 28. As a result,
Jones’ bluesy take on the Rolling Stones “Sympathy for the Devil” might just make its way into the
cool (in every sense of the word) Deer Valley night.
The duchess of coolsville has always had the ability to blow away fans and critics with more than
coolness – and extraordinary musicianship. Critics wax poetic about her vocals, which adapt to the
music with appropriate brittleness or rock-hard precision – and have only gotten better as she’s honed
her continually evolving singer-songwriter magic. As The Independent writes of Jones’ vocals, “It is
a voice from a dream, elusive, yet familiar, transcendent, a messenger from another
place…Stunning.”
And this intimate, “virtuosic performer” (Rolling Stone) knows how to hold an audience in the palm
of her hand. As a Telegraph (Manchester, UK) reviewer puts it, “Jones never was the wistful
wallflower type. She’s an animated performer who appears to live every line as she sings it.”
Lucy Wainwright Roche starts off the evening with a sound NPR describes as “sincere and raw, at
times, recalling Joni Mitchell and Patti Griffin.” The daughter of folk-musicians Loudon Wainwright
III and Suzzy Roche returns to Park City (she last graced The Eccles stage in 2009) with her downto-earth, fresh style. Her “clear as a bell” (The New York Times) vocals and acoustic guitar provide
refreshingly pure folk music with a dash of pop sound.
A third TBA artist is slated to join “Rickie Lee Jones and The Women We Love” concert on Aug. 25.
