Education Classes Content
Elder Abuse and Emergency Preparedness
FBI Agent Sherri Funk, Victim Specialist,
Sherri.funk@ic.fbi.gov
Roberta Sick, Project Director, Partners for
Inclusive Communities
Trauma happens as a result of violence and disasters. Each year hundreds of thousands of older persons
are abused, neglected, and exploited. Many victims are people who are older, frail, and are at risk
because they rely on others to help meet their most basic needs. Abusers are both women and men,
and may be family members, friends, or “trusted others.” The warning signs of elder abuse are
important to recognize. Older people and the programs that serve them must prepare in order to
reduce the effects of trauma should disasters occur.
Understanding Affordable Care
Laura Connerly, Ph.D. Assistant Professor – Family Resource
Management, University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture
Cooperative Extension Service; lconnerly@uaex.edu
The Affordable Care Act provides millions of families an opportunity to obtain health coverage through
affordable health insurance or expanded Medicaid. This session will provide information about how
individuals and families can benefit from tax credits, what consumers need to know about health
insurance, and how to access the Marketplace.

Being heard in today’s 24-7 news cycle can be tough. Pick up tips on reaching the public and the media
through the use of communication plans and trust behaviors. You will also learn some dos and don’ts on
interacting with the media from a former city hall reporter.
Motivation: It’s All Up To You
Bobby Hall, Leadership Development Program Associate,
Communications & Economic Development University of
Arkansas Division of Agriculture, bhall@uaex.edu
No one can motivate anyone else. They may inspire them, they may stimulate them, but motivation is
personal and is up to the individual. Motivation is like learning. You can be taught, but the learning is
up to you. In Steven Covey’s book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, he states that “Between
stimulus [inspiration, stimulation] and response [motivation], is our greatest freedom, our freedom to
choose.” Motivation is your choice, your greatest freedom.
Strategic Marketing of EHC
Stacey McCullough, PhD, Assistant Professor-Community
& Economic Development, University of Arkansas Division
Of Agriculture, smccollough@uaex.edu
Marketing and effective communication about the Extension Homemakers Club are critical to the
organization’s sustainability. If members truly believe EHC is of value to themselves and the
communities in which clubs exist, it is important for members to share this participants will develop an
elevator speech to market the EHC program and learn the basics of how to develop a strategic
marketing plan.
Keys to Embracing Aging
LaVona Traywick, PhD, Associate Professor, Gerontology
Health and Aging, University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture
ltraywick@uaex.edu
What you do today will affect your future, especially when it comes to aging. Since there is no magic
potion to stop the aging process, it is important to take care of yourself. No one knows this better than
today’s active centenarians, those who are 100 years old and older. From them, we have identified 12
healthy behavior practices that encourage optimal aging throughout the lifespan.
Setting Your Boundaries
Amy Monk, FCS Agent Montgomery County amonk@uaex.edu
Having clear boundaries is essential to a healthy, balanced lifestyle. A boundary is a personal property
line that marks those things for which we are responsible. Boundaries define who we are and who we
are not. Often, EHC members focus so much on being loving and unselfish that they forget their own
limits. In this session, you will complete a self-assessment and receive tips for setting healthy
boundaries.
The Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service offers its programs to all eligible persons regardless of race, color, national origin,
