Each year hundreds of thousands of older persons are abused, neglected, and exploited. Many victims are people who are older, frail, and are at risk because they rely on others to help meet their most basic needs. Abusers are both women and men, and may be family members, friends, or “trusted others.” The warning signs of elder abuse are important to recognize. Older people and the programs that serve them must prepare in order to reduce the effects of trauma should disasters occur.
